ALSA: intel8x0m: fix name of SIS7013 sound chip in comment While grep'ing for SIS7012, I noticed that there is only one reference to it in sound/pci/intel8x0m.c, while most of its code lives in sound/pci/intel8x0.c. This probably was a simple copy'n'paste mistake, as the sound/pci/intel8x0m.c driver implements support for SIS7013 (see DEVICE_SIS), and the two devices seem to share the same behavior / registers. ALSA: intel8x0: Fix the missing snd_card_free() call at probe error The previous cleanup with devres may lead to the incorrect release orders at the probe error handling due to the devres's nature. Until we register the card, snd_card_free() has to be called at first for releasing the stuff properly when the driver tries to manage and release the stuff via card->private_free(). This patch fixes it by calling snd_card_free() on the error from the probe callback using a new helper function. ALSA: intel8x0: Allocate resources with device-managed APIs This patch refactors the intel8x0 and intel8x0m driver codes using devres and gets rid of the driver remove callback. The conversion is fairly straightforward: each API call is replaced with the device-managed API function, e.g. pci_enable_device() -> pcim_enable_device(), and so on. The buffer descriptor list is allocated with a new API, snd_devm_alloc_pages(). A slight code structure change is that the intel8x0 object is allocated as a card's private_data instead of the own lowlevel snd_device object. This simplifies the resource management. And, the take-down procedure is triggered via card->private_free, and it's registered at the end of the whole initialization, i.e. after the all resources get properly managed. The only not-devres-managed resource is the irq handler. Since we need to release at suspend and re-acquire at resume (otherwise something weird happens on some machines), this is still managed manually. But the rest are all freed automatically. The end result is a good amount of code reduction. Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20210715075941.23332-6-tiwai@suse.de Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>

ALSA: intel8x0m: wait a bit before warm reset check At every resume a laptop I use prints this message (at KERN_ERR level): ALSA sound/pci/intel8x0m.c:904: AC'97 warm reset still in progress? [0x2] The thing to note here is that 0x2 corresponds to ICH_AC97COLD. Ie, what seems to be happening is that the register involved indicated a warm reset for some time (as the ICH_AC97WARM bit was set) but by the time the warning is printed, and that same register is checked again, that bit is already cleared and only the ICH_AC97COLD bit is still set. It turns out a warm reset needs some time to settle, but it is currently checked right away. The test therefore fails the first time it is done and schedule_timeout_uninterruptible() will be called. Once we return from that jiffies is already (far) past end_time on this laptop, so we exit the loop, print a warning, and exit the function while the warm reset actually succeeded. A way to fix this is to call usleep_range() after writing to the register involved. A handful of tests suggest 500 usecs is a safe value. (This might punish the "finish cold reset" case, but on this laptop such a cold reset apparently never happens, so I can't say for sure.) While we're at it drop the extra single tick from end_time, as it looks rather silly. Signed-off-by: Paul Bolle <pebolle@tiscali.nl> Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>

[ALSA] Remove sound/driver.h This header file exists only for some hacks to adapt alsa-driver tree. It's useless for building in the kernel. Let's move a few lines in it to sound/core.h and remove it. With this patch, sound/driver.h isn't removed but has just a single compile warning to include it. This should be really killed in future. IRQ: Maintain regs pointer globally rather than passing to IRQ handlers Maintain a per-CPU global "struct pt_regs *" variable which can be used instead of passing regs around manually through all ~1800 interrupt handlers in the Linux kernel. The regs pointer is used in few places, but it potentially costs both stack space and code to pass it around. On the FRV arch, removing the regs parameter from all the genirq function results in a 20% speed up of the IRQ exit path (ie: from leaving timer_interrupt() to leaving do_IRQ()). Where appropriate, an arch may override the generic storage facility and do something different with the variable. On FRV, for instance, the address is maintained in GR28 at all times inside the kernel as part of general exception handling. Having looked over the code, it appears that the parameter may be handed down through up to twenty or so layers of functions. Consider a USB character device attached to a USB hub, attached to a USB controller that posts its interrupts through a cascaded auxiliary interrupt controller. A character device driver may want to pass regs to the sysrq handler through the input layer which adds another few layers of parameter passing. I've build this code with allyesconfig for x86_64 and i386. I've runtested the main part of the code on FRV and i386, though I can't test most of the drivers. I've also done partial conversion for powerpc and MIPS - these at least compile with minimal configurations. This will affect all archs. Mostly the changes should be relatively easy. Take do_IRQ(), store the regs pointer at the beginning, saving the old one: struct pt_regs *old_regs = set_irq_regs(regs); And put the old one back at the end: set_irq_regs(old_regs); Don't pass regs through to generic_handle_irq() or __do_IRQ(). In timer_interrupt(), this sort of change will be necessary: - update_process_times(user_mode(regs)); - profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING, regs); + update_process_times(user_mode(get_irq_regs())); + profile_tick(CPU_PROFILING); I'd like to move update_process_times()'s use of get_irq_regs() into itself, except that i386, alone of the archs, uses something other than user_mode(). Some notes on the interrupt handling in the drivers: (*) input_dev() is now gone entirely. The regs pointer is no longer stored in the input_dev struct. (*) finish_unlinks() in drivers/usb/host/ohci-q.c needs checking. It does something different depending on whether it's been supplied with a regs pointer or not. (*) Various IRQ handler function pointers have been moved to type irq_handler_t. Linux-2.6.12-rc2 Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
