batman-adv: mcast: implement multicast packet generation Implement the preparation of a batman-adv multicast packet and use this under certain conditions. For one thing this implements the capability to push a complete batman-adv multicast packet header, including a tracker TVLV with all originator destinations that have signaled interest in it, onto a given ethernet frame with an IP multicast packet inside. For another checks are implemented to determine if encapsulating a multicast packet in this new batman-adv multicast packet type and using it is feasible. Those checks are: 1) Have all nodes signaled that they are capable of handling the new batman-adv multicast packet type? 2) Do all active hard interfaces of all nodes, including us, have an MTU of at least 1280 bytes? 3) Does a complete multicast packet header with all its destination addresses fit onto the given multicast packet / ethernet frame and does not exceed 1280 bytes? If all checks passed then the new batman-adv multicast packet type will be used for transmission and distribution. Otherwise we fall back to one or more batman-adv unicast packet transmissions, if possible. Or if not possible we will fall back to classic flooding through a batman-adv broadcast packet. batman-adv: mcast: implement multicast packet reception and forwarding Implement functionality to receive and forward a new TVLV capable multicast packet type. The new batman-adv multicast packet type allows to contain several originator destination addresses within a TVLV. Routers on the way will potentially split the batman-adv multicast packet and adjust its tracker TVLV contents. Routing decisions are still based on the selected BATMAN IV or BATMAN V routing algorithm. So this new batman-adv multicast packet type retains the same loop-free properties. Also a new OGM multicast TVLV flag is introduced to signal to other nodes that we are capable of handling a batman-adv multicast packet and multicast tracker TVLV. And that all of our hard interfaces have an MTU of at least 1280 bytes (IPv6 minimum MTU), as a simple solution for now to avoid MTU issues while forwarding. batman-adv: mcast: detect, distribute and maintain multicast router presence To be able to apply our group aware multicast optimizations to packets with a scope greater than link-local we need to not only keep track of multicast listeners but also multicast routers. With this patch a node detects the presence of multicast routers on its segment by checking if /proc/sys/net/ipv{4,6}/conf/<bat0|br0(bat)>/mc_forwarding is set for one thing. This option is enabled by multicast routing daemons and needed for the kernel's multicast routing tables to receive and route packets. For another thing if a bridge is configured on top of bat0 then the presence of an IPv6 multicast router behind this bridge is currently detected by checking for an IPv6 multicast "All Routers Address" (ff02::2). This should later be replaced by querying the bridge, which performs proper, RFC4286 compliant Multicast Router Discovery (our simplified approach includes more hosts than necessary, most notably not just multicast routers but also unicast ones and is not applicable for IPv4). If no multicast router is detected then this is signalized via the new BATADV_MCAST_WANT_NO_RTR4 and BATADV_MCAST_WANT_NO_RTR6 multicast tvlv flags. batman-adv: Fix duplicated OGMs on NETDEV_UP The state of slave interfaces are handled differently depending on whether the interface is up or not. All active interfaces (IFF_UP) will transmit OGMs. But for B.A.T.M.A.N. IV, also non-active interfaces are scheduling (low TTL) OGMs on active interfaces. The code which setups and schedules the OGMs must therefore already be called when the interfaces gets added as slave interface and the transmit function must then check whether it has to send out the OGM or not on the specific slave interface. But the commit f0d97253fb5f ("batman-adv: remove ogm_emit and ogm_schedule API calls") moved the setup code from the enable function to the activate function. The latter is called either when the added slave was already up when batadv_hardif_enable_interface processed the new interface or when a NETDEV_UP event was received for this slave interfac. As result, each NETDEV_UP would schedule a new OGM worker for the interface and thus OGMs would be send a lot more than expected. batman-adv: mcast: shorten multicast tt/tvlv worker spinlock section It is not necessary to hold the mla_lock spinlock during the whole multicast tt/tvlv worker callback. Just holding it during the checks and updates of the bat_priv stored multicast flags and mla_list is enough. Therefore this patch splits batadv_mcast_mla_tvlv_update() in two: batadv_mcast_mla_flags_get() at the beginning of the worker to gather and calculate the new multicast flags, which does not need any locking as it neither reads from nor writes to bat_priv->mcast. And batadv_mcast_mla_flags_update() at the end of the worker which commits the newly calculated flags and lists to bat_priv->mcast and therefore needs the lock. batman-adv: Add multicast-to-unicast support for multiple targets With this patch multicast packets with a limited number of destinations (current default: 16) will be split and transmitted by the originator as individual unicast transmissions. Wifi broadcasts with their low bitrate are still a costly undertaking. In a mesh network this cost multiplies with the overall size of the mesh network. Therefore using multiple unicast transmissions instead of broadcast flooding is almost always less burdensome for the mesh network. The maximum amount of unicast packets can be configured via the newly introduced multicast_fanout parameter. If this limit is exceeded distribution will fall back to classic broadcast flooding. The multicast-to-unicast conversion is performed on the initial multicast sender node and counts on a final destination node, mesh-wide basis (and not next hop, neighbor node basis). batman-adv: Add inconsistent gateway netlink dump detection The netlink dump functionality transfers a large number of entries from the kernel to userspace. It is rather likely that the transfer has to interrupted and later continued. During that time, it can happen that either new entries are added or removed. The userspace could than either receive some entries multiple times or miss entries. Commit 670dc2833d14 ("netlink: advertise incomplete dumps") introduced a mechanism to inform userspace about this problem. batman-adv: Move OGM rebroadcast stats to orig_ifinfo B.A.T.M.A.N. IV requires the number of rebroadcast from a neighboring originator. These statistics are gathered per interface which transmitted the OGM (and then received it again). Since an originator is not interface specific, a resizable array was used in each originator. This resizable array had an entry for each interface and had to be resizes (for all OGMs) when the number of active interface was modified. This could cause problems when a large number of interface is added and not enough continuous memory is available to allocate the array. batman-adv: Fix internal interface indices types batman-adv uses internal indices for each enabled and active interface. It is currently used by the B.A.T.M.A.N. IV algorithm to identifify the correct position in the ogm_cnt bitmaps. The type for the number of enabled interfaces (which defines the next interface index) was set to char. This type can be (depending on the architecture) either signed (limiting batman-adv to 127 active slave interfaces) or unsigned (limiting batman-adv to 255 active slave interfaces). This limit was not correctly checked when an interface was enabled and thus an overflow happened. This was only catched on systems with the signed char type when the B.A.T.M.A.N. IV code tried to resize its counter arrays with a negative size. The if_num interface index was only a s16 and therefore significantly smaller than the ifindex (int) used by the code net code. batman-adv: fix TT sync flag inconsistencies This patch fixes an issue in the translation table code potentially leading to a TT Request + Response storm. The issue may occur for nodes involving BLA and an inconsistent configuration of the batman-adv AP isolation feature. However, since the new multicast optimizations, a single, malformed packet may lead to a mesh-wide, persistent Denial-of-Service, too. The issue occurs because nodes are currently OR-ing the TT sync flags of all originators announcing a specific MAC address via the translation table. When an intermediate node now receives a TT Request and wants to answer this on behalf of the destination node, then this intermediate node now responds with an altered flag field and broken CRC. The next OGM of the real destination will lead to a CRC mismatch and triggering a TT Request and Response again. Furthermore, the OR-ing is currently never undone as long as at least one originator announcing the according MAC address remains, leading to the potential persistency of this issue. This patch fixes this issue by storing the flags used in the CRC calculation on a a per TT orig entry basis to be able to respond with the correct, original flags in an intermediate TT Response for one thing. And to be able to correctly unset sync flags once all nodes announcing a sync flag vanish for another. With some carefully placed msleep()s/mdelay()s it can be reproduced easily. The issue is, that on interface removal, any still running worker thread of a forwarding packet will race with the interface purging routine to free a forwarding packet. Temporarily giving up a spin-lock to be able to sleep in the purging routine is not safe. Furthermore, there is a potential general protection fault not just for the purging side shown above, but also on the worker side: Temporarily removing a forw_packet from the according forw_{bcast,bat}_list will make it impossible for the purging routine to catch and cancel it. # How this patch tries to fix it: With this patch we split the queue purging into three steps: Step 1), removing forward packets from the queue of an interface and by that claim it as our responsibility to free. Step 2), we are either lucky to cancel a pending worker before it starts to run. Or if it is already running, we wait and let it do its thing, except two things: Through the claiming in step 1) we prevent workers from a) re-arming themselves. And b) prevent workers from freeing packets which we still hold in the interface purging routine. Finally, step 3, we are sure that no forwarding packets are pending or even running anymore on the interface to remove. We can then safely free the claimed forwarding packets. Goodies for BATMAN V: ("Upgrade your BATMAN IV network to V now to get these for free!") Thanks to the split of OGMv1 into two packet types, OGMv2 and ELP that is, we can now apply the same optimizations stated above to OGMv2 packets, too. batman-adv: Modify mesh_iface outside sysfs context The legacy sysfs interface to modify interfaces belonging to batman-adv is run inside a region holding s_lock. And to add a net_device, it has to also get the rtnl_lock. This is exactly the other way around than in other virtual net_devices and conflicts with netdevice notifier which executes inside rtnl_lock. The inverted lock situation is currently solved by executing the removal of netdevices via workqueue. The workqueue isn't executed inside rtnl_lock and thus can independently get the s_lock and the rtnl_lock. But this workaround fails when the netdevice notifier creates events in quick succession and the earlier triggered removal of a net_device isn't processed in the workqueue before the adding of the new netdevice (with same name) event is issued. Instead the legacy sysfs interface store events have to be enqueued in a workqueue to loose the s_lock. The worker is then free to get the required locks and the deadlock is avoided. batman-adv: Add multicast optimization support for bridged setups With this patch we are finally able to support multicast optimizations in bridged setups, too. So far, if a bridge was added on top of a soft-interface (e.g. bat0) the batman-adv multicast optimizations needed to be disabled to avoid packetloss. Current Linux bridge implementations and API can now provide us with the so far missing information about interested but "remote" multicast receivers behind bridge ports. The Linux bridge performs the detection of remote participants interested in multicast packets with its own and mature so called IGMP and MLD snooping code and stores that in its database. With the new API provided by the bridge batman-adv can now simply hook into this database. We then reliably announce the gathered multicast listeners to other nodes through the batman-adv translation table. Additionally, the Linux bridge provides us with the information about whether an IGMP/MLD querier exists. If there is none then we need to disable multicast optimizations as we cannot learn about multicast listeners on external, bridged-in host then. batman-adv: add detection for complex bridge loops There are network setups where the current bridge loop avoidance can't detect bridge loops. The minimal setup affected would consist of two LANs and two separate meshes, connected in a ring like that: A...(mesh1)...B | | (LAN1) (LAN2) | | C...(mesh2)...D Since both the meshes and backbones are separate, the bridge loop avoidance has not enough information to detect and avoid the loop in this case. Even if these scenarios can't be fixed easily, these kind of loops can be detected. This patch implements a periodic check (running every 60 seconds for now) which sends a broadcast frame with a random MAC address on each backbone VLAN. If a broadcast frame with the same MAC address is received shortly after on the mesh, we know that there must be a loop and report that incident as well as throw an uevent to let others handle that problem. batman-adv: Fix reference counting of hardif_neigh_node object for neigh_node The batadv_neigh_node was specific to a batadv_hardif_neigh_node and held an implicit reference to it. But this reference was never stored in form of a pointer in the batadv_neigh_node itself. Instead batadv_neigh_node_release depends on a consistent state of hard_iface->neigh_list and that batadv_hardif_neigh_get always returns the batadv_hardif_neigh_node object which it has a reference for. But batadv_hardif_neigh_get cannot guarantee that because it is working only with rcu_read_lock on this list. It can therefore happen that a neigh_addr is in this list twice or that batadv_hardif_neigh_get cannot find the batadv_hardif_neigh_node for an neigh_addr due to some other list operations taking place at the same time. batman-adv: B.A.T.M.A.N V - make sure iface is reactivated upon NETDEV_UP event At the moment there is no explicit reactivation of an hard-interface upon NETDEV_UP event. In case of B.A.T.M.A.N. IV the interface is reactivated as soon as the next OGM is scheduled for sending, but this mechanism does not work with B.A.T.M.A.N. V. The latter does not rely on the same scheduling mechanism as its predecessor and for this reason the hard-interface remains deactivated forever after being brought down once. This patch fixes the reactivation mechanism by adding a new routing API which explicitly allows each algorithm to perform any needed operation upon interface re-activation. Such API is optional and is implemented by B.A.T.M.A.N. V only and it just takes care of setting the iface status to ACTIVE Signed-off-by: Antonio Quartulli <a@unstable.cc> Signed-off-by: Marek Lindner <mareklindner@neomailbox.ch>

batman-adv: ELP - compute the metric based on the estimated throughput In case of wireless interface retrieve the throughput by querying cfg80211. To perform this call a separate work must be scheduled because the function may sleep and this is not allowed within an RCU protected context (RCU in this case is used to iterate over all the neighbours). Use ethtool to retrieve information about an Ethernet link like HALF/FULL_DUPLEX and advertised bandwidth (e.g. 100/10Mbps). The metric is updated each time a new ELP packet is sent, this way it is possible to timely react to a metric variation which can imply (for example) a neighbour disconnection. batman-adv: keep track of when unicast packets are sent To enable ELP to send probing packets over wireless links only if needed, batman-adv must keep track of the last time it sent a unicast packet towards every neighbour. For this purpose a 2 main changes are introduced: 1) a new member of the elp_neigh_node structure stores the last time a unicast packet was sent towards this neighbour; 2) a wrapper function for sending unicast packets is implemented. This function will simply update the member describe din point 1) and then forward the packet to the real sending routine. Point 2) implies that any code-path leading to a unicast sending now has to use the new wrapper. batman-adv: OGMv2 - add basic infrastructure This is the initial implementation of the new OGM protocol (version 2). It has been designed to work on top of the newly added ELP. In the previous version the OGM protocol was used to both measure link qualities and flood the network with the metric information. In this version the protocol is in charge of the latter task only, leaving the former to ELP. This means being able to decouple the interval used by the neighbor discovery from the OGM broadcasting, which revealed to be costly in dense networks and needed to be relaxed so leading to a less responsive routing protocol. batman-adv: ELP - adding basic infrastructure The B.A.T.M.A.N. protocol originally only used a single message type (called OGM) to determine the link qualities to the direct neighbors and spreading these link quality information through the whole mesh. This procedure is summarized on the BATMAN concept page and explained in details in the RFC draft published in 2008. This approach was chosen for its simplicity during the protocol design phase and the implementation. However, it also bears some drawbacks: * Wireless interfaces usually come with some packet loss, therefore a higher broadcast rate is desirable to allow a fast reaction on flaky connections. Other interfaces of the same host might be connected to Ethernet LANs / VPNs / etc which rarely exhibit packet loss would benefit from a lower broadcast rate to reduce overhead. * It generally is more desirable to detect local link quality changes at a faster rate than propagating all these changes through the entire mesh (the far end of the mesh does not need to care about local link quality changes that much). Other optimizations strategies, like reducing overhead, might be possible if OGMs weren't used for all tasks in the mesh at the same time. As a result detecting local link qualities shall be handled by an independent message type, ELP, whereas the OGM message type remains responsible for flooding the mesh with these link quality information and determining the overall path transmit qualities. batman-adv: lock crc access in bridge loop avoidance We have found some networks in which nodes were constantly requesting other nodes BLA claim tables to synchronize, just to ask for that again once completed. The reason was that the crc checksum of the asked nodes were out of sync due to missing locking and multiple writes to the same crc checksum when adding/removing entries. Therefore the asked nodes constantly reported the wrong crc, which caused repeating requests. To avoid multiple functions changing a backbone gateways crc entry at the same time, lock it using a spinlock. batman-adv: Fix potential synchronization issues in mcast tvlv handler So far the mcast tvlv handler did not anticipate the processing of multiple incoming OGMs from the same originator at the same time. This can lead to various issues: * Broken refcounting: For instance two mcast handlers might both assume that an originator just got multicast capabilities and will together wrongly decrease mcast.num_disabled by two, potentially leading to an integer underflow. * Potential kernel panic on hlist_del_rcu(): Two mcast handlers might one after another try to do an hlist_del_rcu(&orig->mcast_want_all_*_node). The second one will cause memory corruption / crashes. (Reported by: Sven Eckelmann <sven@narfation.org>) Right in the beginning the code path makes assumptions about the current multicast related state of an originator and bases all updates on that. The easiest and least error prune way to fix the issues in this case is to serialize multiple mcast handler invocations with a spinlock. batman-adv: Add required includes to all files The header files could not be build indepdent from each other. This is happened because headers didn't include the files for things they've used. This was problematic because the success of a build depended on the knowledge about the right order of local includes. Also source files were not including everything they've used explicitly. Instead they required that transitive includes are always stable. This is problematic because some transitive includes are not obvious, depend on config settings and may not be stable in the future. The order for include blocks are: * primary headers (main.h and the *.h file of a *.c file) * global linux headers * required local headers * extra forward declarations for pointers in function/struct declarations The only exceptions are linux/bitops.h and linux/if_ether.h in packet.h. This header file is shared with userspace applications like batctl and must therefore build together with userspace applications. The header linux/bitops.h is not part of the uapi headers and linux/if_ether.h conflicts with the musl implementation of netinet/if_ether.h. The maintainers rejected the use of __KERNEL__ preprocessor checks and thus these two headers are only in main.h. All files using packet.h first have to include main.h to work correctly. batman-adv: fix TT VLAN inconsistency on VLAN re-add When a VLAN interface (on top of batX) is removed and re-added within a short timeframe TT does not have enough time to properly cleanup. This creates an internal TT state mismatch as the newly created softif_vlan will be initialized from scratch with a TT client count of zero (even if TT entries for this VLAN still exist). The resulting TT messages are bogus due to the counter / tt client listing mismatch, thus creating inconsistencies on every node in the network To fix this issue destroy_vlan() has to not free the VLAN object immediately but it has to be kept alive until all the TT entries for this VLAN have been removed. destroy_vlan() still removes the sysfs folder so that the user has the feeling that everything went fine. If the same VLAN is re-added before the old object is free'd, then the latter is resurrected and re-used. Implement such behaviour by increasing the reference counter of a softif_vlan object every time a new local TT entry for such VLAN is created and remove the object from the list only when all the TT entries have been destroyed. batman-adv: Send multicast packets to nodes with a WANT_ALL flag With this patch a node sends IPv4 multicast packets to nodes which have a BATADV_MCAST_WANT_ALL_IPV4 flag set and IPv6 multicast packets to nodes which have a BATADV_MCAST_WANT_ALL_IPV6 flag set, too. Why is this needed? There are scenarios involving bridges where multicast report snooping and multicast TT announcements are not sufficient, which would lead to packet loss for some nodes otherwise: MLDv1 and IGMPv1/IGMPv2 have a suppression mechanism for multicast listener reports. When we have an MLDv1/IGMPv1/IGMPv2 querier behind a bridge then our snooping bridge is potentially not going to see any reports even though listeners exist because according to RFC4541 such reports are only forwarded to multicast routers: ----------------------------------------------------------- --------------- {Querier}---|Snoop. Switch|----{Listener} --------------- \ ^ ------- | br0 | < ??? ------- \ _-~---~_ _-~/ ~-_ ~ batman-adv \-----{Sender} \~_ cloud ~/ -~~__-__-~_/ I) MLDv1 Query: {Querier} -> flooded II) MLDv1 Report: {Listener} -> {Querier} -> br0 cannot detect the {Listener} => Packets from {Sender} need to be forwarded to all detected listeners and MLDv1/IGMPv1/IGMPv2 queriers. ----------------------------------------------------------- Note that we do not need to explicitly forward to MLDv2/IGMPv3 queriers, because these protocols have no report suppression: A bridge has no trouble detecting MLDv2/IGMPv3 listeners. Even though we do not support bridges yet we need to provide the according infrastructure already to not break compatibility later. batman-adv: Add IPv4 link-local/IPv6-ll-all-nodes multicast support With this patch a node may additionally perform the dropping or unicasting behaviour for a link-local IPv4 and link-local-all-nodes IPv6 multicast packet, too. The extra counter and BATADV_MCAST_WANT_ALL_UNSNOOPABLES flag is needed because with a future bridge snooping support integration a node with a bridge on top of its soft interface is not able to reliably detect its multicast listeners for IPv4 link-local and the IPv6 link-local-all-nodes addresses anymore (see RFC4541, section 2.1.2.2 and section 3). Even though this new flag does make "no difference" now, it'll ensure a seamless integration of multicast bridge support without needing to break compatibility later. Also note, that even with multicast bridge support it won't be possible to optimize 224.0.0.x and ff02::1 towards nodes with bridges, they will always receive these ranges. batman-adv: consider outgoing interface in OGM sending The current OGM sending an aggregation functionality decides on which interfaces a packet should be sent when it parses the forward packet struct. However, with the network wide multi interface optimization the outgoing interface is decided by the OGM processing function. This is reflected by moving the decision in the OGM processing function and add the outgoing interface in the forwarding packet struct. This practically implies that an OGM may be added multiple times (once per outgoing interface), and this also affects aggregation which needs to consider the outgoing interface as well. batman-adv: add isolation_mark sysfs attribute This attribute can be used to set and read the value and the mask of the skb mark which will be used to classify the source non-mesh client as ISOLATED. In this way a client can be advertised as such and the mark can potentially be restored at the receiving node before delivering the skb. This can be helpful for creating network wide netfilter policies. This sysfs file expects a string of the shape "$mark/$mask". Where $mark has to be a 32-bit number in any base, while $mask must be a 32bit mask expressed in hex base. Only bits in $mark covered by the bitmask are really stored. batman-adv: send every DHCP packet as bat-unicast In different situations it is possible that the DHCP server or client uses broadcast Ethernet frames to send messages to each other. The GW component in batman-adv takes care of using bat-unicast packets to bring broadcast DHCP Discover/Requests to the "best" server. On the way back the DHCP server usually sends unicasts, but upon client request it may decide to use broadcasts as well. This patch improves the GW component so that it now snoops and sends as unicast all the DHCP packets, no matter if they were generated by a DHCP server or client. Therefore the length truncating is moved to when the packet is actually sent to userspace (this does not support lengths longer than icmp_packet_rr yet). batman-adv: include the sync-flags when compute the global/local table CRC Flags covered by TT_SYNC_MASK are kept in sync among the nodes in the network and therefore they have to be considered while computing the global/local table CRC. In this way a generic originator is able to understand if its table contains the correct flags or not. Bits from 4 to 7 in the TT flags fields are now reserved for "synchronized" flags only. This allows future developers to add more flags of this type without breaking compatibility. It's important to note that not all the remote TT flags are synchronised. This comes from the fact that some flags are used to inject an information once only. batman-adv: make the TT CRC logic VLAN specific This change allows nodes to handle the TT table on a per-VLAN basis. This is needed because nodes may have to store only some of the global entries advertised by another node. In this scenario such nodes would re-create only a partial global table and would not be able to compute a correct CRC anymore. This patch splits the logic and introduces one CRC per VLAN. In this way a node fetching only some entries belonging to some VLANs is still able to compute the needed CRCs and still check the table correctness. With this patch the shape of the TVLV-TT is changed too because now a node needs to advertise all the CRCs of all the VLANs that it is wired to. The debug output of the local Translation Table now shows the CRC along with each entry since there is not a common value for the entire table anymore. The worst case is when one of the tables is accessed after its content has been recently updated but the metadata (TTVN/CRC) has not yet. In this case the reader will get a table content which does not match the TTVN/CRC. This will lead to an inconsistent state and so to a TT recovery. To avoid entering this situation, put a lock around those TT operations recomputing the metadata and around the TT Response creation (the latter is the only reader that accesses the metadata together with the table). batman-adv: tvlv - basic infrastructure The goal is to provide the infrastructure for sending, receiving and parsing information 'containers' while preserving backward compatibility. TVLV (based on the commonly known Type Length Value technique) was chosen as the format for those containers. Even if a node does not know the tvlv type of a certain container it can simply skip the current container and proceed with the next. Past experience has shown features evolve over time, so a 'version' field was added right from the start to allow differentiating between feature variants - hence the name: T(ype) V(ersion) L(ength) V(alue). This patch introduces the basic TVLV infrastructure: * register / unregister tvlv containers to be sent with each OGM (on primary interfaces only) * register / unregister callback handlers to be called upon finding the corresponding tvlv type in a tvlv buffer * unicast tvlv send / receive API calls Signed-off-by: Marek Lindner <lindner_marek@yahoo.de> Signed-off-by: Spyros Gasteratos <morfeas3000@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Antonio Quartulli <antonio@meshcoding.com>

batman-adv: network coding - detect coding nodes and remove these after timeout To use network coding efficiently, a relay must know when neighbor nodes are likely to have enough information to be able to decode a network coded packet. This is detected by using OGMs from batman-adv to discover when one neighbor is in range of another neighbor. The relay check the TLL to detect when an OGM is forwarded from one neighbor by another neighbor, and thereby knows that the two neighbors are in range and thus overhear packets sent by each other. This information is saved in the orig_node struct to be used when searching for coding opportunities. Two lists are added to the orig_node struct: One for neighbors that can hear the orig_node (outgoing nc_nodes) and one for neighbors that the orig_node can hear (incoming nc_nodes). Information about nc_nodes is kept for 10 seconds and is available through debugfs in batman_adv/nc_nodes to use when debugging network coding. batman-adv: network coding - add the initial infrastructure code Network coding exploits the 802.11 shared medium to allow multiple packets to be sent in a single transmission. In brief, a relay can XOR two packets, and send the coded packet to two destinations. The receivers can decode one of the original packets by XOR'ing the coded packet with the other original packet. This will lead to increased throughput in topologies where two packets cross one relay. In a simple topology with three nodes, it takes four transmissions without network coding to get one packet from Node A to Node B and one from Node B to Node A: 1. Node A ---- p1 ---> Node R Node B 2. Node A Node R <--- p2 ---- Node B 3. Node A <--- p2 ---- Node R Node B 4. Node A Node R ---- p1 ---> Node B With network coding, the relay only needs one transmission, which saves us one slot of valuable airtime: 1. Node A ---- p1 ---> Node R Node B 2. Node A Node R <--- p2 ---- Node B 3. Node A <- p1 x p2 - Node R - p1 x p2 -> Node B The same principle holds for a topology including five nodes. Here the packets from Node A and Node B are overheard by Node C and Node D, respectively. This allows Node R to send a network coded packet to save one transmission: Node A Node B | \ / | | p1 p2 | | \ / | p1 > Node R < p2 | | | / \ | | p1 x p2 p1 x p2 | v / \ v / \ Node C < > Node D More information is available on the open-mesh.org wiki[1]. This patch adds the initial code to support network coding in batman-adv. It sets up a worker thread to do house keeping and adds a sysfs file to enable/disable network coding. The feature is disabled by default, as it requires a wifi-driver with working promiscuous mode, and also because it adds a small delay at each hop. batman-adv: substitute tt_poss_change with a per-tt_entry flag tt_poss_change is a node-wide flag which tells whether the node is in a roaming state (a client recently moved to/away from it) in order to let it apply special re-routing rules. However this flag does not give a clear idea of the current state because it is not possible to understand *which client* is actually involved in the roaming. For this reason a better approach has been chosen: instead of using a node-wide variable, the roaming state is now given by a per-tt_entry ROAM flag which, in case of packet coming through the node, tells the node whether the real destination is in roaming state or not. With this flag change, batadv_check_unicast_ttvn() has also been rearranged in order to better fit the new re-routing logic and to be much more readable. batman-adv: detect not yet announced clients With the current TT mechanism a new client joining the network is not immediately able to communicate with other hosts because its MAC address has not been announced yet. This situation holds until the first OGM containing its joining event will be spread over the mesh network. This behaviour can be acceptable in networks where the originator interval is a small value (e.g. 1sec) but if that value is set to an higher time (e.g. 5secs) the client could suffer from several malfunctions like DHCP client timeouts, etc. This patch adds an early detection mechanism that makes nodes in the network able to recognise "not yet announced clients" by means of the broadcast packets they emitted on connection (e.g. ARP or DHCP request). The added client will then be confirmed upon receiving the OGM claiming it or purged if such OGM is not received within a fixed amount of time. Signed-off-by: Antonio Quartulli <ordex@autistici.org>

batman-adv: add basic bridge loop avoidance code This second version of the bridge loop avoidance for batman-adv avoids loops between the mesh and a backbone (usually a LAN). By connecting multiple batman-adv mesh nodes to the same ethernet segment a loop can be created when the soft-interface is bridged into that ethernet segment. A simple visualization of the loop involving the most common case - a LAN as ethernet segment: node1 <-- LAN --> node2 | | wifi <-- mesh --> wifi Packets from the LAN (e.g. ARP broadcasts) will circle forever from node1 or node2 over the mesh back into the LAN. With this patch, batman recognizes backbone gateways, nodes which are part of the mesh and backbone/LAN at the same time. Each backbone gateway "claims" clients from within the mesh to handle them exclusively. By restricting that only responsible backbone gateways may handle their claimed clients traffic, loops are effectively avoided. batman-adv: unify hash_entry field position in tt_local/global_entry Function tt_response_fill_table() actually uses a tt_local_entry pointer to iterate either over the local or the global table entries (it depends on the what hash table is passed as argument). To iterate over such entries the hlist_for_each_entry_rcu() macro has to access their "hash_entry" field which MUST be at the same position in both the tt_global/local_entry structures. batman-adv: unify flags for tt_change/tt_local_entry/tt_global_entry The tt_local_entry structure now has a 'flags' field. This helps to unify the flags format to all the client related structures (tt_global_entry and tt_change). The 'never_purge' field is now encoded in the 'flags' one. To optimise the usage of this field, its length has been increased to 16bit in order to use the eight leading bits (from 0 to 7) to store flags that have to be sent on the wire, while the eight ending ones are used for local computation only. Moreover 'enum tt_change_flags' is now called 'enum tt_client_flags' and the defined values apply to the tt_local_entry, tt_global_entry and the tt_change 'flags' field. batman-adv: improved roaming mechanism With the current client announcement implementation, in case of roaming, an update is triggered on the new AP serving the client. At that point the new information is spread around by means of the OGM broadcasting mechanism. Until this operations is not executed, no node is able to correctly route traffic towards the client. This obviously causes packet drops and introduces a delay in the time needed by the client to recover its connections. A new packet type called ROAMING_ADVERTISEMENT is added to account this issue. This message is sent in case of roaming from the new AP serving the client to the old one and will contain the client MAC address. In this way an out-of-OGM update is immediately committed, so that the old node can update its global translation table. Traffic reaching this node will then be redirected to the correct destination utilising the fresher information. Thus reducing the packet drops and the connection recovery delay. batman-adv: improved client announcement mechanism The client announcement mechanism informs every mesh node in the network of any connected non-mesh client, in order to find the path towards that client from any given point in the mesh. The old implementation was based on the simple idea of appending a data buffer to each OGM containing all the client MAC addresses the node is serving. All other nodes can populate their global translation tables (table which links client MAC addresses to node addresses) using this MAC address buffer and linking it to the node's address contained in the OGM. A node that wants to contact a client has to lookup the node the client is connected to and its address in the global translation table. It is easy to understand that this implementation suffers from several issues: - big overhead (each and every OGM contains the entire list of connected clients) - high latencies for client route updates due to long OGM trip time and OGM losses The new implementation addresses these issues by appending client changes (new client joined or a client left) to the OGM instead of filling it with all the client addresses each time. In this way nodes can modify their global tables by means of "updates", thus reducing the overhead within the OGMs. To keep the entire network in sync each node maintains a translation table version number (ttvn) and a translation table checksum. These values are spread with the OGM to allow all the network participants to determine whether or not they need to update their translation table information. When a translation table lookup is performed in order to send a packet to a client attached to another node, the destination's ttvn is added to the payload packet. Forwarding nodes can compare the packet's ttvn with their destination's ttvn (this node could have a fresher information than the source) and re-route the packet if necessary. This greatly reduces the packet loss of clients roaming from one AP to the next.
