pinctrl: bcm2835: Make pin freeing behavior configurable Until now after a bcm2835 pin was freed its pinmux was set to GPIO_IN. So in case it was configured as GPIO_OUT before the configured output level also get lost. As long as GPIO sysfs was used this wasn't actually a problem because the pins and their possible output level were kept by sysfs. Since more and more Raspberry Pi users start using libgpiod they are confused about this behavior. So make the pin freeing behavior of GPIO_OUT configurable via module parameter. In case pinctrl-bcm2835.persist_gpio_outputs is set to 1, the output level is kept. This patch based on the downstream work of Phil Elwell. pinctrl-bcm2835.c: fix race condition when setting gpio dir In the past setting the pin direction called pinctrl_gpio_direction() which uses a mutex to serialize this. That was changed to set the direction directly in the pin controller driver, but that lost the serialization mechanism. Since the direction of multiple pins are in the same register you can have a race condition, something that was in fact observed with the cec-gpio driver. pinctrl: bcm2835: Change init order for gpio hogs ...and gpio-ranges pinctrl-bcm2835 is a combined pinctrl/gpio driver. Currently the gpio side is registered first, but this breaks gpio hogs (which are configured during gpiochip_add_data). Part of the hog initialisation is a call to pinctrl_gpio_request, and since the pinctrl driver hasn't yet been registered this results in an -EPROBE_DEFER from which it can never recover. Change the initialisation sequence to register the pinctrl driver first. This also solves a similar problem with the gpio-ranges property, which is required in order for released pins to be returned to inputs. pinctrl: bcm2835: Use raw spinlock for RT compatibility The BCM2835 pinctrl driver acquires a spinlock in its ->irq_enable, ->irq_disable and ->irq_set_type callbacks. Spinlocks become sleeping locks with CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_FULL=y, therefore invocation of one of the callbacks in atomic context may cause a hard lockup if at least two GPIO pins in the same bank are used as interrupts. The issue doesn't occur with just a single interrupt pin per bank because the lock is never contended. I'm experiencing such lockups with GPIO 8 and 28 used as level-triggered interrupts, i.e. with ->irq_disable being invoked on reception of every IRQ. The critical section protected by the spinlock is very small (one bitop and one RMW of an MMIO register), hence converting to a raw spinlock seems a better trade-off than converting the driver to threaded IRQ handling (which would increase latency to handle an interrupt). treewide: kzalloc() -> kcalloc() The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). This patch replaces cases of: kzalloc(a * b, gfp) with: kcalloc(a * b, gfp) as well as handling cases of: kzalloc(a * b * c, gfp) with: kzalloc(array3_size(a, b, c), gfp) as it's slightly less ugly than: kzalloc_array(array_size(a, b), c, gfp) This does, however, attempt to ignore constant size factors like: kzalloc(4 * 1024, gfp) though any constants defined via macros get caught up in the conversion. Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. The Coccinelle script used for this was: // Fix redundant parens around sizeof(). @@ type TYPE; expression THING, E; @@ ( kzalloc( - (sizeof(TYPE)) * E + sizeof(TYPE) * E , ...) | kzalloc( - (sizeof(THING)) * E + sizeof(THING) * E , ...) ) // Drop single-byte sizes and redundant parens. @@ expression COUNT; pinctrl: bcm: clean up modular vs. non-modular distinctions Fixups here tend to be more of a conglomerate of some of the other repeated/systematic ones we've seen in the earlier pinctrl cleanups. We remove module.h from code that isn't doing anything modular at all; if they have __init sections, then replace it with init.h One driver has a .remove that would be dispatched on module_exit, and as that code is essentially orphaned, so we remove it. In case anyone was previously doing the (pointless) unbind to get to that function, we disable unbind for this one driver as well. A couple bool drivers (hence non-modular) are converted over to to builtin_platform_driver(). Since module_platform_driver() uses the same init level priority as builtin_platform_driver() the init ordering remains unchanged with this commit. Also note that MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE is a no-op for non-modular code. We also delete the MODULE_LICENSE tag etc. since all that information was (or is now) contained at the top of the file in the comments. pinctrl: bcm2835: switch to GPIOLIB_IRQCHIP It should be possible to use the GPIOLIB_IRQCHIP helper library with the BCM2835 driver since it is a pretty straight forward cascaded irqchip. The only difference from other drivers is that the BCM2835 has several banks for a single gpiochip, and each bank has a separate IRQ line. Instead of creating one gpiochip per bank, a single gpiochip covers all banks GPIO lines. This makes it necessary to resolve the bank ID in the IRQ handler. The GPIOLIB_IRQCHIP allows several IRQs to be cascaded off the same gpiochip by calling gpiochip_set_chained_irqchip() repeatedly, but we have been a bit short on examples for how this should be handled in practice, so this is intended as an example of how this can be achieved. The old code did not model the chip as a chained interrupt handler, but this patch also rectifies that situation. Confusingly, the GPIO interrupt groups don't correspond directly with the GPIO control banks. Instead, GPIOs 0-27 generate IRQ GPIO0, 28-45 IRQ GPIO1 and 46-53 IRQ GPIO2. Awkwardly, the GPIOs for IRQ GPIO1 straddle two 32-entry GPIO banks, so split out a function to process the interrupts for a single GPIO bank. gpio: change member .dev to .parent The name .dev in a struct is normally reserved for a struct device that is let us say a superclass to the thing described by the struct. struct gpio_chip stands out by confusingly using a struct device *dev to point to the parent device (such as a platform_device) that represents the hardware. As we want to give gpio_chip:s real devices, this is not working. We need to rename this member to parent. This was done by two coccinelle scripts, I guess it is possible to combine them into one, but I don't know such stuff. They look like this: @@ struct gpio_chip *var; @@ -var->dev +var->parent and: @@ struct gpio_chip var; @@ -var.dev +var.parent and: @@ struct bgpio_chip *var; @@ -var->gc.dev +var->gc.parent Plus a few instances of bgpio that I couldn't figure out how to teach Coccinelle to rewrite. This patch hits all over the place, but I *strongly* prefer this solution to any piecemal approaches that just exercise patch mechanics all over the place. It mainly hits drivers/gpio and drivers/pinctrl which is my own backyard anyway. pinctrl: kill off set_irq_flags usage set_irq_flags is ARM specific with custom flags which have genirq equivalents. Convert drivers to use the genirq interfaces directly, so we can kill off set_irq_flags. The translation of flags is as follows: IRQF_VALID -> !IRQ_NOREQUEST IRQF_PROBE -> !IRQ_NOPROBE IRQF_NOAUTOEN -> IRQ_NOAUTOEN For IRQs managed by an irqdomain, the irqdomain core code handles clearing and setting IRQ_NOREQUEST already, so there is no need to do this in .map() functions and we can simply remove the set_irq_flags calls. Some users also modify IRQ_NOPROBE and this has been maintained although it is not clear that is really needed. There appears to be a great deal of blind copy and paste of this code. pinctrl: bcm2835: Clear the event latch register when disabling interrupts It's possible to hit a race condition if interrupts are generated on a GPIO pin when the IRQ line in question is being disabled. If the interrupt is freed, bcm2835_gpio_irq_disable() is called which disables the event generation sources (edge, level). If an event occurred between the last disabling of hard IRQs and the write to the event source registers, a bit would be set in the GPIO event detect register (GPEDSn) which goes unacknowledged by bcm2835_gpio_irq_handler() so Linux complains loudly. There is no per-GPIO mask register, so when disabling GPIO interrupts write 1 to the relevant bit in GPEDSn to clear out any stale events. pinctrl: make pinctrl_register() return proper error code Currently, pinctrl_register() just returns NULL on error, so the callers can not know the exact reason of the failure. Some of the pinctrl drivers return -EINVAL, some -ENODEV, and some -ENOMEM on error of pinctrl_register(), although the error code might be different from the real cause of the error. This commit reworks pinctrl_register() to return the appropriate error code and modifies all of the pinctrl drivers to use IS_ERR() for the error checking and PTR_ERR() for getting the error code. pinctrl: bcm2835: Fix support for threaded level triggered IRQs Currently, the driver uses handle_simple_irq for all IRQ types and hard codes the acknowledge for different IRQ types into the handler. It is better to use the IRQ core as intended and let it handle the differences between the various types of IRQ. For example the current system does not work for threaded level triggered IRQs as these need to be masked until the threaded handler has run.
