drm/i915/dmc: change how to disable DMC firmware using module param The distinction between the dmc_firmware_path module param being NULL and the empty string "" is problematic. It's not possible to set the parameter back to NULL via sysfs or debugfs. Remove the distinction, and consider NULL and the empty string to be the same thing, and use the platform default for them. This removes the possibility to disable DMC (and runtime PM) via i915.dmc_firmware_path="". Instead, use "/dev/null" as the magic firmware path to skip DMC firmware loading and disable runtime PM. v2: Add support for i915.dmc_firmware_path="/dev/null" (Gustavo) Cc: Gustavo Sousa <gustavo.sousa@intel.com> Cc: Lucas De Marchi <lucas.demarchi@intel.com> Reviewed-by: Gustavo Sousa <gustavo.sousa@intel.com> Acked-by: Lucas De Marchi <lucas.demarchi@intel.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/8695aca8a6643e36bb680bc2dcab97c637e70b00.1713519628.git.jani.nikula@intel.com Signed-off-by: Jani Nikula <jani.nikula@intel.com>

Revert "drm/i915/display: move dmc_firmware_path to display params" This reverts commit 0d82a0d6f5561af8dea7011d1b7cae510021723e. The commit failed to take into account that the parameter duplication and debugfs for char * parameters were subtly different between i915 core and display, and caused the DMC and PM to be disabled. Moreover, the patch was pushed with failing CI results. Revert, and get back to the drawing board. drm/i915: Expand force_probe to block probe of devices as well. There are new cases where we want to block i915 probe, such as when experimenting or developing the new Xe driver. But also, with the new hybrid cards, users or developers might want to use i915 only on integrated and fully block the probe of the i915 for the discrete. Or vice versa. There are even older development and validation reasons, like when you use some distro where the modprobe.blacklist is not present. But in any case, let's introduce a more granular control, but without introducing yet another parameter, but using the existent force_probe one. Just by adding a ! in the begin of the id in the force_probe, like in this case where we would block the probe for Alder Lake: $ insmod i915.ko force_probe='!46a6' v2: Take care of '*' and '!*' cases as pointed out by Gustavo and Jani. drm: POC drm on dyndbg - use in core, 2 helpers, 3 drivers. Use DECLARE_DYNDBG_CLASSMAP across DRM: - in .c files, since macro defines/initializes a record - in drivers, $mod_{drv,drm,param}.c ie where param setup is done, since a classmap is param related - in drm/drm_print.c since existing __drm_debug param is defined there, and we ifdef it, and provide an elaborated alternative. - in drm_*_helper modules: dp/drm_dp - 1st item in makefile target drivers/gpu/drm/drm_crtc_helper.c - random pick iirc. Since these modules all use identical CLASSMAP declarations (ie: names and .class_id's) they will all respond together to "class DRM_UT_*" query-commands: :#> echo class DRM_UT_KMS +p > /proc/dynamic_debug/control NOTES: This changes __drm_debug from int to ulong, so BIT() is usable on it. DRM's enum drm_debug_category values need to sync with the index of their respective class-names here. Then .class_id == category, and dyndbg's class FOO mechanisms will enable drm_dbg(DRM_UT_KMS, ...). Though DRM needs consistent categories across all modules, thats not generally needed; modules X and Y could define FOO differently (ie a different NAME => class_id mapping), changes are made according to each module's private class-map. No callsites are actually selected by this patch, since none are class'd yet. drm/i915/dp: Allow forcing specific interfaces through enable_dpcd_backlight Since we now support controlling panel backlights through DPCD using both the standard VESA interface, and Intel's proprietary HDR backlight interface, we should allow the user to be able to explicitly choose between one or the other in the event that we're wrong about panels reliably reporting support for the Intel HDR interface. So, this commit adds support for this by introducing two new enable_dpcd_backlight options: 2 which forces i915 to only probe for the VESA interface, and 3 which forces i915 to only probe for the Intel backlight interface (might be useful if we find panels in the wild that report the VESA interface in their VBT, but actually only support the Intel backlight interface). v3: * Rebase Signed-off-by: Lyude Paul <lyude@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Jani Nikula <jani.nikula@intel.com> Cc: thaytan@noraisin.net Cc: Vasily Khoruzhick <anarsoul@gmail.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210114221709.2261452-5-lyude@redhat.com

drm/i915: Auto detect DPCD backlight support by default Turns out we actually already have some companies, such as Lenovo, shipping machines with AMOLED screens that don't allow controlling the backlight through the usual PWM interface and only allow controlling it through the standard EDP DPCD interface. One example of one of these laptops is the X1 Extreme 2nd Generation. Since we've got systems that need this turned on by default now to have backlight controls working out of the box, let's start auto-detecting it for systems by default based on what the VBT tells us. drm/i915/params: add i915 parameters to debugfs Add a debugfs subdirectory i915_params with all the i915 module parameters. This is a first step, with lots of boilerplate, and not much benefit yet. This will result in a new device specific debugfs directory at /sys/kernel/debug/dri/<N>/i915_params duplicating the module specific sysfs directory at /sys/module/i915/parameters/. Going forward, all users of the parameters should use the debugfs, with the module parameters being phased out. Add debugfs permissions to I915_PARAMS_FOR_EACH(). This duplicates the mode with module parameter sysfs, but the goal is to make the module parameters read-only initial values for device specific parameters. 0 mode will bypass debugfs creation. Use it for verbose_state_checks which will need special attention in follow-up work. drm/i915/lmem: add the fake lmem region Intended for upstream testing so that we can still exercise the LMEM plumbing and !i915_ggtt_has_aperture paths. Smoke tested on Skull Canyon device. This works by allocating an intel_memory_region for a reserved portion of system memory, which we treat like LMEM. For the LMEMBAR we steal the aperture and 1:1 it map to the stolen region. To enable simply set the i915 modparam fake_lmem_start= on the kernel cmdline with the start of reserved region(see memmap=). The size of the region we can use is determined by the size of the mappable aperture, so the size of reserved region should be >= mappable_end. For now we only enable for the selftests. Depends on CONFIG_DRM_I915_UNSTABLE being enabled. eg. memmap=2G$16G i915.fake_lmem_start=0x400000000 v2: make fake_lmem_start an i915 modparam Signed-off-by: Matthew Auld <matthew.auld@intel.com> Cc: Joonas Lahtinen <joonas.lahtinen@linux.intel.com> Cc: Abdiel Janulgue <abdiel.janulgue@linux.intel.com> Cc: Arkadiusz Hiler <arkadiusz.hiler@intel.com> Cc: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Reviewed-by: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Signed-off-by: Chris Wilson <chris@chris-wilson.co.uk> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20191030173320.8850-1-matthew.auld@intel.com

drm/i915: add force_probe module parameter to replace alpha_support The i915.alpha_support module parameter has caused some confusion along the way. Add new i915.force_probe parameter to specify PCI IDs of devices to probe, when the devices are recognized but not automatically probed by the driver. The name is intended to reflect what the parameter effectively does, avoiding any overloaded semantics of "alpha" and "support". The parameter supports "" to disable, "<pci-id>,[<pci-id>,...]" to enable force probe for one or more devices, and "*" to enable force probe for all known devices. Also add new CONFIG_DRM_I915_FORCE_PROBE config option to replace the DRM_I915_ALPHA_SUPPORT option. This defaults to "*" if DRM_I915_ALPHA_SUPPORT=y. Instead of replacing i915.alpha_support immediately, let the two coexist for a while, with a deprecation message, for a transition period. drm/i915/opregion: let user specify override VBT via firmware load Sometimes it would be most enlightening to debug systems by replacing the VBT to be used. For example, in the referenced bug the BIOS provides different VBT depending on the boot mode (UEFI vs. legacy). It would be interesting to try the failing boot mode with the VBT from the working boot, and see if that makes a difference. Add a module parameter to load the VBT using the firmware loader, not unlike the EDID firmware mechanism. As a starting point for experimenting, one can pick up the BIOS provided VBT from /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_opregion/i915_vbt. v2: clarify firmware load return value check (Bob) v3: kfree the loaded firmware blob References: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=97822#c83 Reviewed-by: Bob Paauwe <bob.j.paauwe@intel.com> Acked-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel@ffwll.ch> Signed-off-by: Jani Nikula <jani.nikula@intel.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20170817115209.25912-1-jani.nikula@intel.com

drm/i915: rename preliminary_hw_support to alpha_support The term "preliminary hardware support" has always caused confusion both among users and developers. It has always been about preliminary driver support for new hardware, and not so much about preliminary hardware. Of course, initially both the software and hardware are in early stages, but the distinction becomes more clear when the user picks up production hardware and an older kernel to go with it, with just the early support we had for the hardware at the time the kernel was released. The user has to specifically enable the alpha quality *driver* support for the hardware in that specific kernel version. Rename preliminary_hw_support to alpha_support to emphasize that the module parameter, config option, and flag are about software, not about hardware. Improve the language in help texts and debug logging as well. This appears to be a good time to do the change, as there are currently no platforms with preliminary^W alpha support. drm/i915: Allow disabling error capture We currently capture the GPU state after we detect a hang. This is vital for us to both triage and debug hangs in the wild (post-mortem debugging). However, it comes at the cost of running some potentially dangerous code (since it has to make very few assumption about the state of the driver) that is quite resource intensive. This patch introduces both a method to disable error capture at runtime (for users who hit bugs at runtime and need a workaround) and to disable error capture at compiletime (for realtime users who want to minimise any possible latency, and never require error capture, saving ~30k of code). The cost is that we now have to be wary of (and test!) a kconfig flag and a module parameter. The effect of the module parameter is easy to verify through code inspection and runtime testing, but a kconfig flag needs regular compile checking. "drm/i915: Make unpin async" doesn't handle the unthrottled cursor updates correctly, leading to an apparent pin count leak. This is caught by the WARN_ON in i915_gem_object_do_pin which screams if we have more than DRM_I915_GEM_OBJECT_MAX_PIN_COUNT pins. Unfortuantely we can't just revert these two because this patch series came with a built-in bisect breakage in the form of temporarily removing the unthrottled cursor update hack for legacy cursor ioctl. Therefore there's no other option than to revert the entire pile :( There's one tiny conflict in intel_drv.h due to other patches, nothing serious. Normally I'd wait a bit longer with doing a maintainer revert, but since the minimal set of patches we need to revert (due to the bisect breakage) is so big, time is running out fast. And very soon (especially after a few attempts at fixing issues) it'll be really hard to revert things cleanly. Lessons learned: - Not a good idea to rush the review (done by someone fairly new to the area) and not make sure domain experts had a chance to read it. - Patches should be properly split up. I only looked at the two patches that should be reverted in detail, but both look like the mix up different things in one patch. - Patches really should have proper commit messages. Especially when doing more than one thing, and especially when touching critical and tricky core code. - Building a patch series and r-b stamping it when it has a built-in bisect breakage is not a good idea. - I also think we need to stop building up technical debt by postponing atomic igt testcases even longer. I think it's clear that there's enough corner cases in this beast that we really need to have the testcases _before_ the next step lands. drm/i915/guc: add enable_guc_loading parameter Split the function of "enable_guc_submission" into two separate options. The new one ("enable_guc_loading") controls only the *fetching and loading* of the GuC firmware image. The existing one is redefined to control only the *use* of the GuC for batch submission once the firmware is loaded. In addition, the degree of control has been refined from a simple bool to an integer key, allowing several options: -1 (default) whatever the platform default is 0 DISABLE don't load/use the GuC 1 BEST EFFORT try to load/use the GuC, fallback if not available 2 REQUIRE must load/use the GuC, else leave the GPU wedged The new platform default (as coded here) will be to attempt to load the GuC iff the device has a GuC that requires firmware, but not yet to use it for submission. A later patch will change to enable it if appropriate. v4: Changed some error-message levels, mostly ERROR->INFO, per review comments by Tvrtko Ursulin. v5: Dropped one more error message, disabled GuC submission on hypothetical firmware-free devices [Tvrtko Ursulin]. v6: Logging tidy by Tvrtko Ursulin: * Do not log falling back to execlists when wedging the GPU. * Do not log fw load errors when load was disabled by user. * Pass down some error code from fw load for log message to make more sense. Revert "drm/i915: skip modeset if compatible for everyone." This reverts commit 6764e9f8724f1231b4deac53b9a82286ac0830e7 Author: Maarten Lankhorst <maarten.lankhorst@linux.intel.com> Date: Thu Aug 27 15:44:06 2015 +0200 drm/i915: skip modeset if compatible for everyone. Bring back the i915.fastboot module parameter, disabled by default, due to backlight regression on Chromebook Pixel 2015. Apparently the firmware of the Chromebook in question enables the panel but disables backlight to avoid a brief garbage scanout upon loading the kernel/module. With fastboot, we leave the backlight untouched, in this case disabled. The user would have to do a modeset (i.e. not just crank up the brightness) to enable the backlight. There is no clean fix readily available, so get back to the drawing board by reverting. [N.B. The reference below is for when the thread was included on public lists, and some of the context had already been dropped by then.] Reported-and-tested-by: Olof Johansson <olof@lixom.net> Acked-by: Maarten Lankhorst <maarten.lankhorst@linux.intel.com> Acked-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch> References: http://marc.info/?i=CAKMK7uES7xk05ki92oeX6gmvZWAh9f2vL7yz=6T+fGK9J3X7cQ@mail.gmail.com Fixes: 6764e9f8724f ("drm/i915: skip modeset if compatible for everyone.") drm/i915: fix handling of the disable_power_well module option When this option is 0 (so the power well support is disabled) we are supposed to enable all power wells once and don't disable them unless we system suspend the device. Currently if the option is 0, we can call the power well enable handlers multiple times, whenever their refcount changes from 0->1. This may not be a problem for the HW, but it's not logical and may trigger some warnings in the power well code which doesn't expect this. So simply keep around a reference while we are not system suspended to solve this. For simplicity mark the module option read only, so we don't need to deal with re-enabling the feature during runtime. drm/i915: reorganize the unclaimed register detection code The current code only runs when we do an I915_WRITE operation. It checks if the unclaimed register flag is set before we do the operation, and then it checks it again after we do the operation. This double check allows us to find out if the I915_WRITE operation in question is the bad one, or if some previous code is the bad one. When it finds a problem, our code uses DRM_ERROR to signal it. The good thing about the current code is that it detects the problem, so at least we can know we did something wrong. The problem is that even though we find the problem, we don't really have much information to actually debug it. So whenever I see one of these DRM_ERROR messages on my systems, the first thing I do is apply a patch to change the DRM_ERROR to a WARN and also check for unclaimed registers on I915_READ operations. This local patch makes things even slower, but it usually helps a lot in finding the bad code. The first point here is that since the current code is only useful to detect whether we have a problem or not, but it is not really good to find the cause of the problem, I don't think we should be checking both before and after every I915_WRITE operation: just doing the check once should be enough for us to quickly detect problems. With this change, the code that runs by default for every single user will only do 1 read operation for every single I915_WRITE, instead of 2. This patch does this change. The second point is that the local patch I have should be upstream, but since it makes things slower it should be disabled by default. So I added the i915.mmio_debug option to enable it. So after this patch, this is what will happen: - By default, we will try to detect unclaimed registers once after every I915_WRITE operation. Previously we tried twice for every I915_WRITE. - When we find an unclaimed register we will still print a DRM_ERROR message, but we will now tell the user to try again with i915.mmio_debug=1. - When we use i915.mmio_debug=1 we will try to find unclaimed registers both before and after every I915_READ and I915_WRITE operation, and we will print stack traces in case we find them. This should really help locating the exact point of the bad code (or at least finding out that i915.ko is not the problem). This commit also opens space for really-slow register debugging operations on other platforms. In theory we can now add lots and lots of debug code behind i915.mmio_debug, enable this option on our tests, and catch more problems. v2: - Remove not-so-useful comments (Daniel) - Fix the param definition macros (Rodrigo) Reviewed-by: Rodrigo Vivi <rodrigo.vivi@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Paulo Zanoni <paulo.r.zanoni@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch>

drm/i915: make PC8 be part of runtime PM suspend/resume Currently, when our driver becomes idle for i915.pc8_timeout (default: 5s) we enable PC8, so we save some power, but not everything we can. Then, while PC8 is enabled, if we stay idle for more autosuspend_delay_ms (default: 10s) we'll enter runtime PM and put the graphics device in D3 state, saving even more power. The two features are separate things with increasing levels of power savings, but if we disable PC8 we'll never get into D3. While from the modularity point of view it would be nice to keep these features as separate, we have reasons to merge them: - We are not aware of anybody wanting a "PC8 without D3" environment. - If we keep both features as separate, we'll have to to test both PC8 and PC8+D3 code paths. We're already having a major pain to make QA do automated testing of just one thing, testing both paths will cost even more. - Only Haswell+ supports PC8, so if we want to add runtime PM support to, for example, IVB, we'll have to copy some code from the PC8 feature to runtime PM, so merging both features as a single thing will make it easier for enabling runtime PM on other platforms. This patch only does the very basic steps required to have PC8 and runtime PM merged on a single feature: the next patches will take care of cleaning up everything. v2: - Rebase. v3: - Rebase. - Fully remove the deprecated i915 params since Daniel doesn't consider them as part of the ABI. v4: - Rebase. - Fix typo in the commit message. v5: - Rebase, again. - Add a huge comment explaining the different forcewake usage (Chris, Daniel). - Use open-coded forcewake functions (Daniel). drm/i915: Implement command buffer parsing logic The command parser scans batch buffers submitted via execbuffer ioctls before the driver submits them to hardware. At a high level, it looks for several things: 1) Commands which are explicitly defined as privileged or which should only be used by the kernel driver. The parser generally rejects such commands, with the provision that it may allow some from the drm master process. 2) Commands which access registers. To support correct/enhanced userspace functionality, particularly certain OpenGL extensions, the parser provides a whitelist of registers which userspace may safely access (for both normal and drm master processes). 3) Commands which access privileged memory (i.e. GGTT, HWS page, etc). The parser always rejects such commands. See the overview comment in the source for more details. This patch only implements the logic. drm/i915: move module parameters into a struct, in a new file With 20+ module parameters, I think referring to them via a struct improves clarity over just having a bunch of globals. While at it, move the parameter initialization and definitions into a new file i915_params.c to reduce clutter in i915_drv.c. Apart from the ill-named i915_enable_rc6, i915_enable_fbc and i915_enable_ppgtt parameters, for which we lose the "i915_" prefix internally, the module parameters now look the same both on the kernel command line and in code. For example, "i915.modeset". The downsides of the change are losing static on a couple of variables and not having the initialization and module_param_named() right next to each other. On the other hand, all module parameters are now defined in one place at i915_params.c. Plus you can do this to find all module parameter references: $ git grep "i915\." -- drivers/gpu/drm/i915 v2: - move the definitions into a new file - s/i915_params/i915/ - make i915_try_reset i915.reset, for consistency Signed-off-by: Jani Nikula <jani.nikula@intel.com> Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch>
