UPDATING revision 88567
1Updating Information for FreeBSD current users 2 3This file is maintained and copyrighted by M. Warner Losh 4<imp@village.org>. Please send new entries directly to him. See end 5of file for further details. For commonly done items, please see the 6COMMON ITEMS: section later in the file. 7 820011204: 9 sos added VCD/SVCD support to ata driver and that needs the 10 kernel and burncd to be in sync. 11 1220011203: 13 The procfs pseudo-filesystem has now been converted to use the 14 pseudofs framework. If you have 'options PROCFS' in your 15 kernel config, you'll need to add 'options PSEUDOFS' if it's 16 not there already. 17 18 This change temporarily breaks truss(1); use ktrace(1) instead 19 until the issue has been resolved. 20 2120011202: 22 A security hole in OpenSSH involving `UseLogin yes' has been 23 patched. 24 2520011126: 26 You need to remove /usr/obj/.../usr.bin/tip before rebuilding 27 after this date. 28 2920011103: 30 Most of the awk issues have been resolved. Some rough 31 edges may be left, but for the most part things should be 32 back to "normal." For CURRENT's usual definition of "normal." 33 3420011030: 35 Awk has been upgraded to the one true awk from bell labs. Expect 36 choppy waves in the upgrade process. 37 3820011030: 39 The asr driver problem has been resolved. 40 4120011027: 42 Due to changes in other parts of the system, the asr driver 43 now causes the system to panic on boot. Do not use it pending 44 correction. Comment it out of any kernel config file that you 45 try to use from this date forward. 46 4720011025: 48 When crossbuilding, use TARGET=xxx where you used to use 49 MACHINE=xxx. You don't need to set TARGET_ARCH and TARGET, 50 unless you are changing both of them. To cross build pc98 on 51 an alpha, for example, you need to set TARGET=pc98 and 52 TARGET_ARCH=i386. 53 5420011001: 55 The kernel interface that burncd depends on has changed. 56 You must recompile both the kernel and userland applications 57 at the same time. 58 5920010929: 60 When crossbuilding, please set TARGET_ARCH rather than 61 MACHINE_ARCH to indicate the target. In the future, one will 62 set TARGET_MACHINE where you set MACHINE now. At the moment, 63 setting MACHINE alone for same MACHINE_ARCH machines works 64 (eg, you can build pc98 on a i386 machine and vice versa). 65 6620010927: 67 Some weird problems result from using ACPI on some machines. 68 To disable ACPI you can add 69 hint.acpi.0.disable="1" 70 to /boot/loader.conf (or by putting set X=Y at the boot 71 loader "ok" prompt). 72 73 Alternatively, you can remove it from /boot/kernel/acpi.ko 74 or use the MODULES_OVERRIDE function in your kernel config 75 file and not list acpi in that list. 76 7720010924: 78 The buildworld has been fixed. You may need to install 79 the 4.x compatibility libraries for some old binaries 80 to work. Add COMPAT4X=true to your /etc/make.conf to 81 get them installed on every installworld, or execute the 82 following to get them installed only once: 83 cd src/lib/compat/compat4x.<arch> 84 make all install 85 You will see ``__stdoutp undefined'' until you do this. 86 8720010919: 88 There's a bug in the world build process. The cross-tools 89 are build with the NEW headers, but the OLD libc.a. This 90 leads to all kinds of problems with the new libc. A temporary 91 workaround is to add 92 CFLAGS="-O -pipe -D_OLD_STDIO" 93 before building world when upgrading from 4.x to current. This 94 can be removed afterwards. 95 96 A proper fix to the buildworld target is needed. 97 9820010918: 99 Peter has committed his new kthread nfs client/server code. 100 NFS may be unstable after this date. 101 10220010912: 103 KSE has hit the tree. Lots of things are now different in 104 the kernel. While a few problems were introduced in the 105 initial commit, most of the major ones have been found and 106 corrected. 107 10820010901: 109 In OLDCARD, CardBus bridges appear to be stable. The work 110 arounds described in the 20010604 entry are now no longer 111 necessary and will be ignored. Most insert/remove problems 112 have been rectified around this date. 113 11420010823: 115 named now runs as user bind and group bind rather than as 116 root. If named_enable is set to YES in /etc/rc.conf, ensure 117 that user bind is available in /etc/passwd (using vipw(8)) 118 and that group bind is available in /etc/group. Also make 119 sure that user or group bind has read (and not write) 120 permission for your name server configuration and that it 121 has read and write permission for your slave zone files and 122 directory. 123 124 If you wish to continue to run named as root (a less secure 125 alternative), add a line to /etc/rc.conf saying 126 127 named_flags= 128 12920010709: 130 The PAM libraries have had an API upgrade that is beyond 131 the ability of the shared library major number to handle. 132 It is manifested by PAM-using ports dumping core. The 133 solution is to rebuild those ports. 134 13520010628: 136 The kernel compile module has moved from src/sys/compile/FOO 137 to src/sys/${MACHINE}/compile/FOO. 138 13920010625: 140 The pccard modem issue from 20010613 has been corrected. 141 OLDCARD support is still a little weak in -current. slot 1 is 142 known not to work on some TI based cardbus bridges. Some 143 cardbus bridges do not properly detect insert/removal events. 144 IRQ configuration needs more safety belts. 145 14620010617: 147 Softupdates problems have been corrected. 148 14920010614: 150 Peter ripped out the linkerset support. You must, as always, 151 rerun config after you cvsup if you are using the traditional 152 kernel building methods. 153 15420010613: 155 pccard modems may not work with current after 20010604 date. Some 156 do, others result in panics. *MAKE*SURE* that you update your 157 config and /etc/rc.conf ala the 20010604 entry, or you will have 158 problems (this issue will be fixed, it just hasn't been yet). 159 16020010613: 161 SOFTUPDATES seem to be broken since the middle of May or so. Do not 162 use them in current. You can disable softupdates on all mounted 163 partitions, or remove SOFTUPDATES the kernel config file. 164 16520010612: 166 After Peter's commits to the hints code, people have been noticing 167 that certain devices are attached (or try to) twice. This is due 168 to having both static hints as well as a /boot/device.hints. To 169 work around this issue, please use only one or the other mechanism 170 until this bug is fixed. 171 172 Please note that a feature of config is that if you have config 173 file FOO and FOO.hints, it automatically adds FOO.hints to the 174 hints.c file, wheather you want it to or not. 175 17620010610: 177 Locale names have changed to match other systems better. 178 17920010604: 180 pccard support for pci cards has been committed. You must change 181 your /etc/pccard.conf irq lines. It must match the irq used by 182 pcic device. Interrupt storms may result if you fail to do this. 183 Interrupt storms look a lot like a hang. 184 185 You must also install a new pccardd, otherwise you will get an 186 interrupt storm at card reset time (just after it tells you what 187 it is). 188 189 pccardd_flags="-I" is necessary for the time being. It tells pccardd 190 not to ask the kernel if the interrupt is really free or not before 191 using it. You can either change the /etc/pccard.conf irq lines to 192 match pcic, or add "-i X" to the pccardd_flags. 193 19420010530: 195 INSTALL=install -C is being deprecated. If you want to do this, 196 use COPY=-C instead. The former method will be supported for only 197 a limited time. If you see 198 199install: warning: the -d and -C options may not be specified together 200 201 in your makeworld, then you need to migrate towards using 202 COPY=-C. 203 20420010525: 205 It appears that vm is now stable enough to use again. However, 206 there may be other problems, so caution is still urged. alpha 207 definitely is in bad shape. 208 20920010521: 210 Minor repo damange has happened. This may cause problems 211 with cvsup of ports. If you get errors, please see 212 http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=27495 213 at the bottom for details on a workaround. The error message 214 is 215Updater failed: Cannot delete "/usr/ports/www/jakarta-tomcat/files": Directory not empty 216 21720010520: 218 Vm and/or swapping are busted on -current. Please be patient. 219 22020010519: 221 pccard has had much reorganizational work done to it over 222 the past few days. Everything should still work, but if 223 not, please contact imp@freebsd.org. 224 22520010517: 226 ata ioctl changed. Make sure to recompile both kernel and 227 userland at the same time. 228 22920010517: 230 New ncurses imported. 231 23220010512: 233 DEVFS is now opt out, not opt in. Barring major problems, this 234 will be the only way to go starting July 1. 235 23620010502: 237 Perl breakage in 20010501 was corrected at 14:18:33 PDT. 238 23920010501: 240 Building perl was broken at 02:25:25 PDT. 241 24220010430: 243 The bug in 20010429 was corrected at 07:35:37 PDT. It is safe to 244 go back in the water. 245 24620010429: 247 A bad bug was committed at 04:48:42 PDT. Don't use kernels after 248 this date, but before the correction date. 249 25020010423: 251 old fsck and new kernel interactions appear to have been fixed. 252 25320010411: 254 fsck and the kernel were changed to handle some optimizations 255 to directory layout. This breaks backward compatibility. 256 Update only if you understand that you must not use the old 257 fsck with the new kernel ever. 258 25920010330: 260 fsck has changed the meaning of the pass column in /etc/fstab. 261 Please see the cvs commit to fsck.8 or the fsck.8 man page for 262 details. It is unclear if changes to /etc/fstab are necessary. 263 26420010319: 265 portmap had changed name to rpcbind for maximum POLA in your 266 current world. /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} needs changes. nfs and 267 other rpc based programs that rely on portmapper will not work 268 without updates to /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} and /etc/netconfig. 269 27020010315: 271 ata subsystem changes. ATA_ENABLE_ATAPI_DMA, ATA_ENABLE_WC 272 and ATA_ENABEL_TAGS are no longer kernel options. They have 273 been replaced by tunables. See ata.4 for details. 274 27520010312: 276 The fxp driver was converted to use miibus. If you compile 277 fxp into your kernel statically, you will need to add miibus. 278 27920010312: 280 The wi device now defaults to BSS (infrastructure) mode 281 instead of ad-hoc. 282 28320010310: 284 /dev/urandom should be a symbolic link to /dev/random now. 285 Users of current not using DEVFS need to run MAKEDEV std. 286 ssh might not work if you don't. 287 28820010303: 289 The ed driver has been updated. It now allows mii attachments, 290 which means that you must include the miibus in your kernel if 291 you use the ed driver. 292 29320010220: 294 The problems with libc have been corrected. It is now mostly 295 safe to go back into the water. 296 29720010211: 298 The size of FILE was changed. This breaks upgrading. If 299 you must upgrade, be prepared for pain. It also breaks almost 300 all binaries that you've compiled on -current. You are warned 301 that before upgrading would be a good time to do a level 0 302 dump of your system. No, really, I mean it this time. 303 304 To get to the new system, you'll need to use the following 305 workaround. Hopefully this can be sorted out so that we 306 don't have to move this to the updating section. 307 308 To get around the installworld problem, do: 309 # cd /usr/src/usr.bin/sed 310 # make install 311 # cd /usr/src 312 # make installworld 313 If that doesn't work, then try: 314 # make -k installworld 315 # make installworld 316 31720010207: 318 DEVFS is now the default. If you use vinum, make sure that you 319 do not include devfs in your kernel as problems result. 320 32120010205: 322 FFS_ROOT and CD9660_ROOT have been removed or deprecated. 323 Remove them from your config. 324 32520010122: 326 ****************************** WARNING ****************************** 327 buildkernel has been changed slightly 328 ****************************** WARNING ****************************** 329 KERNCONF replaces the variable KERNEL for buildkernel. You 330 should update your scripts and make.conf accordingly. 331 33220010119: 333 config has changed to allow DEV_FOO as a replacement for NFOO. 334 This requires a new config to build correctly. 335 33620010116: 337 The kerrnel option I386_CPU is now mutually exclusive with the 338 other cpu types. If you have an i386 system, be sure that it 339 only had this line. Remove it for all other configurations. 340 34120010110: 342 Changes to the kernel require it and burncd be in sync. 343 34420010102: 345 Everyone who has hw.sndunit set to something in 346 /etc/sysctl.conf, it is now hw.snd.unit. 347 34820010101: 349 ex and vi were broken by some changes to sys/queue.h. If you 350 have a bad vi, you will see make buildworld fail with a core 351 dump while building termcap. You can work around this problem 352 by adding -k to your make buildworld. This will cause the 353 build to complete and install a new vi. Once that's done, you 354 can rebuild again without the -k to pick up anything that 355 might have been ignored by the -k option. 356 357 Others have suggested that you can just rebuild libc if your 358 vi/ex is dynamically linked, but I've not received any reports 359 of this working. 360 36120001228: 362 There have been some changes to libcrypt in -current. The 363 libscrypt/libdescrypt symlink sillyness is gone and the installed 364 libcrypt is fully functional. Be aware of this. 365 36620001218: 367 Linksys Fast Ethernet PCCARD cards supported by the ed driver 368 now require the addition of flag 0x80000 to their config line 369 in pccard.conf(5). This flag is not optional. These Linksys 370 cards will not be recognized without it. 371 37220001205: 373 Important new FreeBSD-version stuff: PAM support has been worked 374 in, partially from the "Unix" OpenSSH version. This requires 375 adding the following in pam.conf: 376 377 sshd auth sufficient pam_skey.so 378 sshd auth required pam_unix.so try_first_pass 379 sshd session required pam_permit.so 380 38120001031: 382 cvs updated to 1.11. 383 38420001020: 385 The random device needs more entropy, so you need to make sure 386 that you've run mergemaster to get a /etc/rc which will seed 387 /dev/random. If you don't and the system hangs after ldconfig, 388 then banging on the keyboard randomly until it unhangs is one 389 workaround. 390 39120001010: 392 ****************************** WARNING ****************************** 393 Sendmail has been updated. 394 ****************************** WARNING ****************************** 395 o mail.local(8) is no longer installed as a set-user-id binary. 396 o sendmail(8) is now built with STARTTLS support unless NO_OPENSSL 397 is set. 398 o The default /etc/mail/sendmail.cf disables the SMTP EXPN and VRFY 399 commands. 400 o Now using sendmail's version of vacation(1). 401 o The sendmail cf building tools (contrib/sendmail/cf) are installed 402 in /usr/share/sendmail/cf. 403 o sendmail.cw changed to local-host-names 404 405 More details can be found at 406 http://people.freebsd.org/~imp/UPDATING/sendmail-20001010 407 40820001009: 409 The ports tree's new layout is in place. Be sure to update 410 your entire ports tree, or you will have problems. 411 41220001006: 413 The perl build procedure no longer installs miniperl, nor uses 414 the installed miniperl. It is recommended that you delete 415 /usr/bin/miniperl. 416 41720001005: 418 This weekend the ports tree will be updated to a new layout. 419 It will be in an inconsistent state until noted in the UPDATING 420 file, or with asami-san's message to the relevant mailing 421 lists. With this new layout, you'll need to update the whole 422 tree for anything to work. 423 42420000928: 425 There was a change in the passwd format. Need more information. 426 42720000916: 428 /boot/kernel/kernel.ko -> /boot/kernel/kernel change has taken 429 place. Please update boot loader (not the boot blocks) at the 430 same time as your kernel. 431 43220000914: 433 The new pmtimer device is necessary for laptops. Failure to 434 include the device will cause suspended laptops losing time 435 when they resume. Include 436 device pmtimer 437 in your config file and 438 hint.pmtimer.0.at="isa" 439 to your /boot/device.hints file. 440 44120000911: 442 The random device has been turned into a (pseudo-)device, 443 rather than an option. The supplied kernel config files have 444 been updated. You will need to do something similar in your 445 own kernel config file. 446 Remove: 447 options RANDOMDEV 448 Add: 449 device random 450 If you prefer to load the loadable module, you need to do 451 nothing. 452 45320000909: 454 The random device module has been renamed from randomdev.ko to 455 random.ko. You will need to edit your /boot/loader.conf to 456 reflect this if you load this module at boot time. 457 The line should read: 458 random_load="YES" 459 46020000907: 461 The SMPNG commit has happened. It should work, but if it 462 doesn't, fallback to the PRE_SMPNG CVS tag. There are likely 463 to be a variety of minor issues. Please see 20000905 to make 464 sure you don't have model loading problems which might at 465 first blush appear related to SMP. 466 46720000906: 468 nsswitch has been imported from NetBSD. Among other things, 469 this means that /etc/host.conf is no longer used. See 470 nsswitch.conf(5) instead. Note that at boot time rc.network 471 will attempt to produce a new nsswitch.conf file for you if you 472 don't have one, and you have host.conf. 473 47420000905: 475 The ucred structure changed size. This breaks the interface 476 that mountd uses. Trying to use an older mountd with a newer 477 kernel guarantees a panic. This means that you need to use 478 kernels newer than today only with matching mountd, but you 479 needed to do that anyway with the boot loader changes. 480 48120000905: 482 The boot loader has been updated. The new default kernel is 483 now /boot/kernel/kernel.ko. The new default module location 484 is /boot/kernel. 485 486 You *MUST* upgrade your boot loader and kernel at the same time. 487 The easiest way to do this is to do the buildworld/buildkernel/ 488 installkernel/installworld dance. 489 490 Furthermore, you are urged to delete your old /modules directory 491 before booting the new kernel, since kldload will find stale 492 modules in that directory instead of finding them in the correct 493 path, /boot/kernel. The most common complaint that this cures 494 is that the linux module crashes your machine after the update. 495 496 if [ ! -d /boot/kernel.old ]; then 497 mv /modules.old /boot/kernel.old 498 chflags noschg /kernel.old 499 mv /kernel.old /boot/kernel.old/kernel.ko 500 chflags schg /boot/kernel.old/kernel.ko 501 fi 502 50320000904: 504 A new issue with the sendmail upgrade has come to light. 505 /etc/aliases has moved to /etc/mail/aliases. Mergemaster will 506 incorrectly install the default aliases in /etc/mail rather than 507 move the old one from /etc. So you'll need to manually move the 508 file, create a symbolic link, remove the old /etc/aliases.db and 509 run newaliases. For safety sake, you should stop sendmail 510 while doing this and run the upgrade when locally sourced email 511 is not likely to be generated. 512 51320000825: 514 /boot/device.hints is now required for installkernel to 515 succeed. You should copy GENERIC.hints for your architecture 516 into /boot/device.hints. If and only if you compile hints 517 into your kernel, then this file may be empty. Please note, 518 if you have an empty or missing /boot/device.hints file and 519 you neglected to compile hints into your kernel, no boot 520 messages will appear after the boot loader tries to start the 521 kernel. 522 52320000821: 524 If you do NOT have ``options RANDOMDEV'' in your kernel and 525 you DO want the random device then add randomdev_load="YES" to 526 /boot/loader.conf. 527 52820000812: 529 suidperl is now always built and installed on the system, but 530 with permissions of 511. If you have applications that use 531 this program, you are now required to add ENABLE_SUIDPERL=true 532 to /etc/make.conf. If you forget to do this, 533 chmod 4511 /usr/bin/suidperl 534 will fix this until the next build. 535 53620000812: 537 sendmail has been updated from 8.9.3 to 8.11.0. Some of the more 538 visible changes that may immediately affect your configuration 539 include: 540 - New default file locations from src/contrib/sendmail/cf/README 541 - newaliases limited to root and trusted users 542 - MSA port (587) turned on by default 543 - New queue file naming system so can't go from 8.11 -> 8.9 544 - FEATURE(`rbl') renamed to FEATURE(`dnsbl') 545 - FEATURE(`nullclient') is more full featured 546 - FEATURE(`nouucp') requires an argument: `reject' or `nospecial' 547 - mail.local FreeBSD-only -b option changed to -B 548 - See src/contrib/sendmail/RELEASE_NOTES for more info 549 55020000810: 551 suidperl (aka sperl) is no longer build by default. You must 552 specifically define BUILD_SUIDPERL to "true" for it to be build. 553 Furthermore, we recommend that you remove /usr/bin/sperl* and 554 /usr/bin/suidperl files from your system unless you have a 555 specific use for it. 556 55720000729: 558 Networking defaults have been tightened. Anybody upgrading 559 /etc/defaults/rc.conf needs to add the following lines to 560 /etc/rc.conf if they want to have the same setup 561 afterwards (unless the variables already are set, of course): 562 # Enable network daemons for user convenience. 563 inetd_enable="YES" 564 portmap_enable="YES" 565 sendmail_enable="YES" 566 56720000728: 568 If you have null_load="YES" in your /boot/loader.conf, you 569 will need to change that to nullfs_load="YES". 570 57120000728: 572 The "installkernel" target has changed slightly. Now even if 573 you override KERNEL e.g. 'make installkernel KERNEL=MYKERNEL' 574 it will install the MYKERNEL file (built with the buildkernel 575 target) as /kernel rather than /MYKERNEL. Those who have 576 updated their /boot/loader.conf files to point to /MYKERNEL 577 should remove that entry or perform manual rename of /kernel 578 to /MYKERNEL. 579 58020000711: 581 If you use CVSUP or CTM to get CVS trees, AND you used to get 582 the old crypto files from internat.freebsd.org AND you check 583 out files from the CVS tree with the cvs command, please read 584 http://people.freebsd.org/~imp/internat.txt 585 for details on potential problems that you might have and how 586 to get around them. 587 588 If you are merely a mirror, or don't answer yes to each of the 589 clauses above, you needn't worry. 590 59120000711: 592 /etc/security has been updated to print the inode number of 593 setuid programs that have changed. You will see a large spike 594 in the number of changed programs the first time when you run 595 mergemaster to get a new /etc/security. 596 59720000710: 598 /dev/random now has good entropy collection (from the keyboard 599 and sysmouse drivers). Please ensure that either `options 600 RANDOMDEV' is present in your kernel config file or that 601 `randomdev_load="YES"' is in your /boot/loader.conf. If you do 602 not have the /dev/random driver, OpenSSL (and consequently 603 lots of crypto tools (like SSH)) will fail with strange 604 errors. (see below, 20000624). 605 606 FreeBSD-current is safe again to run Crypto. 607 60820000709: 609 phk made the malloc default options AJ. This may slow things 610 down and uncover other latent bugs in the code. If you need to 611 run at full speed, you can disable this by doing the following: 612 ln -s aj /etc/malloc.conf 613 61420000706: 615 libftpio's version was accidentally bumped a few days ago. This 616 has been corrected. You may need to remove /usr/lib/libftpio.so.6 617 before doing your next buildworld/installworld pair. It certainly 618 won't hurt to remove it before the update procedure. It will 619 break fetch until a new one is built, but ftp can be used in the 620 interim if needed. 621 62220000705: 623 The crypto packages have changed for the cvsup. This has been done 624 in a backward compatible way, but the old packages will go away at 625 some point in the future. Look at /usr/share/examples/cvsup for 626 details. 627 62820000704: 629 With the new sys/modules/sound/drivers/*, you will need to 630 set SYSDIR until you do an installworld after July 7th. 631 63220000704: 633 rc.shutdown and rc will now call the rc.d scripts with start 634 or stop. This may cause some harmless warnings from older 635 rc.d scripts that haven't been updated. 636 63720000630: 638 The libfetch based version of fetch has gone into the tree. 639 Minor problems may result on some of the less popular sites, 640 which should be reported to des@freebsd.org. 641 64220000625: 643 From approximately this date forward, one must have the crypto 644 system installed in order to build the system and kernel. 645 While not technically strictly true, one should treat it as 646 required and grab the crypto bits. If you are grabbing CVS 647 trees, src-all and cvs-crypto should be treated as if they 648 were required. You should check with the latest collections 649 to make sure that these haven't changed. 650 65120000624: 652 Mark Murray just committed the first parts of a cleanup of 653 /dev/zero, et al. This is also cleaning up /dev/random. 654 The entropy is disconnected, so DO NOT USE VERSIONS OF FREEBSD 655 -CURRENT FROM THIS POINT FORWARD for cryptographic services 656 until Mark can merge in the fixes to this work in progress. 657 openssh and openssl should not be used to generate keys from this 658 date to the completion of the work. 659 660 If you must operate at this reduced level of security, add ' 661 options RANDOMDEV' to your kernel or modload the randomdev 662 module. You may also need to copy a new MAKEDEV to /dev and 663 recreate the random and urandom devices. 664 66520000622: 666 The license on the softupdates is now a standard 2 clause 667 BSD license. You may need to remove your symbolic links 668 that used to be required when updating. 669 67020000621: 671 Scott Flatman <sf@aracnet.com> sent in a decent write-up on 672 the config file update procedure. 673 http://people.freebsd.org/~imp/config-upd.html 674 NOTE: LINT is gone. It has been replaced with NOTES. NOTES 675 isn't buildable. However, you can generate a LINT file. 676 67720000620: 678 Binutils 2.10 have hit the tree, or will shortly. As soon 679 as they do, the problem noted in 20000522 will be resolved and 680 that workaround will no longer be required. 681 68220000615: 683 phk removed the compatibility creation of wd devices in the 684 ad driver. If you haven't done so already, you must update 685 your fstab, etc to use the ad devices instead of the wd 686 devices. 687 688 In addition, you'll need to update your boot blocks to a 689 more modern version, if you haven't already done so. Modern 690 here means 4.0 release or newer (although older releases 691 may work). 692 69320000612: 694 Peter took an axe to config(8). Be sure that you read his mail 695 on the topic before even thinking about updating. You will 696 need to create a /boot/device.hints or add a hints directive 697 to your config file to compile them in statically. The format 698 of the config file has changed as well. Please see GENERIC or 699 NEWCARD for examples of the new format. 700 70120000522: 702 A new set of binutils went into the tree today. Anybody 703 building a kernel after this point is advised that they need 704 to rebuild their binutils (or better yet do a 705 buildworld/installworld) before building a new kernel. 706 707 Due to bugs in binutils, using malloc options (eg /etc/malloc.conf 708 or MALLOC_OPTIONS env var) J will cause ld to dump core. It 709 is recommended that you don't set this option until the problem 710 is resolved. 711 71220000513: 713 The ethernet drivers were all updated to clean up the BPF handling. 714 71520000510: 716 The problems with boot blocks on the alphas have been corrected. 717 This will require some care in updating alphas. A new libstand 718 is requires for the boot blocks to build properly. 719 72020000503: 721 Recompile all kld modules. Proper version dependency info 722 is now available. 723 72420000502: 725 Modules have been disconnected from the buildworld tree and 726 connected to the kernel building instead. 727 72820000427: 729 You may need to build gperf 730 cd /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/gperf && make depend all install 731 when upgrading from 4.0 -> current. The build system now uses 732 an option only in -current. 733 73420000417: 735 The method that we brand ELF binaries has changed to be more 736 acceptable to the binutils maintainers. You will need to 737 rebrand your ELF binaries that aren't native. One problem 738 binary is the Linux ldconfig. After your make world, but 739 before you reboot, you'll need to issue: 740 brandelf -t Linux /compat/linux/sbin/ldconfig 741 if you have Linux compatibility enabled on your machine. 742 74320000320: 744 If you have really bad/marginal IDE drives, you may find they 745 don't work well. Use pio mode instead. The easiest way to 746 cope if you have a problem combination is to add: 747 /sbin/sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio, pio, pio, pio 748 to the start of /etc/rc.conf. 749 75020000319: 751 The ISA and PCI compatibility shims have been connected to the 752 options COMPAT_OLDISA and COMPAT_OLDPCI. If you are using old 753 style PCI or ISA drivers (i.e. tx, voxware, etc.) you must 754 include the appropriate option in your kernel config. Drivers 755 using the shims should be updated or they won't ship with 756 5.0-RELEASE, targeted for 2001. 757 75820000318: 759 We've entered the traditional post release dumping party. 760 Large kernel changes are being committed and are in the 761 works. It is important to keep the systems' klds and kernel 762 in sync as kernel interfaces and structures are changing. 763 Before reporting kernel panics, make sure that all modules 764 that you are loading are up to date. 765 76620000315: 767 If you are upgrading from an older version of FreeBSD, you 768 need to update your boot blocks as well. 'disklabel -B ad0' 769 will do the trick. This isn't critical until you remove your 770 wd device entries in /dev, at which point your system will not 771 boot. 772 77320000315: 774 4.0 RELEASE shipped. Please see the 4.0 UPDATING file for how 775 to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.x. 776 777COMMON ITEMS: 778 779 General Notes 780 ------------- 781 Avoid using make -j when upgrading. From time to time in the 782 past there have been problems using -j with buildworld and/or 783 installworld. This is especially true when upgrading between 784 "distant" versions (eg one that cross a major release boundary 785 or several minor releases, or when several months have passed 786 on the -current branch). 787 788 To build a kernel 789 ----------------- 790 If you are updating from a prior version of FreeBSD (even one just 791 a few days old), you should follow this procedure. With a 792 /usr/obj tree with a fresh buildworld, 793 make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 794 make installkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 795 796 To just build a kernel when you know that it won't mess you up 797 -------------------------------------------------------------- 798 cd src/sys/{i386,alpha}/conf 799 config KERNEL_NAME_HERE [1] 800 cd ../../compile/KERNEL_NAME_HERE 801 make depend 802 make 803 make install 804 805 [1] If in doubt, -r might help here. 806 807 If this fails, go to the "To build a kernel" section. 808 809 To rebuild everything and install it on the current system. 810 ----------------------------------------------------------- 811 make world 812 Build a new kernel, see above. 813 814 To upgrade from 4.x-stable to current 815 ------------------------------------- 816 make buildworld 817 make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 818 cp src/sys/${MACHINE_ARCH}/conf/GENERIC.hints /boot/device.hints [2] 819 make installkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 820 reboot in single user [3] 821 make installworld 822 mergemaster [4] 823 [1] 824 <reboot> 825 826 Make sure that you've read the UPDATING file to understand the 827 tweaks to various things you need. At this point in the life 828 cycle of current, things change often and you are on your own 829 to cope. The defaults can also change, so please read ALL of 830 the UPDATING entries. 831 832 Also, if you are tracking -current, you must be subscribed to 833 freebsd-current@freebsd.org. Make sure that before you update 834 your sources that you have read and understood all the recent 835 messages there. If in doubt, please track -stable which has 836 much fewer pitfalls. 837 838 [1] If you have third party modules, such as vmware, you 839 should disable them at this point so they don't crash your 840 system on reboot. 841 842 [2] If you have legacy ISA devices, you may need to create 843 your own device.hints to reflect your unique hardware 844 configuration. 845 846 [3] From the bootblocks, boot -s, and then do 847 fsck -p 848 mount -u / 849 mount -a 850 cd /usr/src 851 adjkerntz -i # if COMS is wall time 852 853 [4] Note: This step is non-optional. Failure to do this step 854 can result in a significant reduction in the functionality of the 855 system. Attempting to do it by hand is not recommended and those 856 that pursue this avenue should read this file carefully, as well 857 as the archives of freebsd-current and freebsd-hackers mailing lists 858 for potential gotchas. 859 860FORMAT: 861 862This file contains a list, in reverse chronological order, of major 863breakages in tracking -current. Not all things will be listed here, 864and it only starts on March 15, 2000. Updating files can found in 865previous releases if your system is older than this. 866 867Please filter your entries through Warner Losh (imp@village.org) so 868that the style, formatting, etc of this file can be maintained. 869 870Copyright information: 871 872Copyright 1998, 2001 M.
