7254219Scy
8254219ScyNOTE TO PEOPLE WHO THINK THAT 5.0-CURRENT IS SLOW:
9254219Scy	FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT has many debugging features turned on, in
10254219Scy	both the kernel and userland. These features attempt to detect
11254219Scy	incorrect use of system primitives, and encourage loud failure
12254219Scy	through extra sanity checking and fail stop semantics. They
13254219Scy	also substantially impact system performance. If you want to
14254219Scy	do performance measurement, benchmarking, and optimization,
15254219Scy	you'll want to turn them off. This includes various WITNESS-
16254219Scy	related kernel options, INVARIANTS, malloc debugging flags
17254219Scy	in userland, and various verbose features in the kernel. Many
18254219Scy	developers choose to disable these features on build machines
19254219Scy	to maximize performance.
20254219Scy
21254219Scy	In addition, IDE write caching is currently disabled by default
22254219Scy	due to on-going concerns about disk write order and file system
23254219Scy	integrity. Re-enabling write caching can substantially improve
24254219Scy	performance.
25254219Scy
26254219Scy20020404:
27254219Scy	New sendmail startup scripts have been installed to make it
28254219Scy	easier to use alternative MTAs with FreeBSD. Setting the rc.conf
29254219Scy	variable sendmail_enable to "NO" no longer prevents any sendmail
30254219Scy	daemons from starting. Instead, either set sendmail_enable to
31254219Scy	"NONE" or change mta_start_script to a script for starting
32254219Scy	an alternative MTA. Setting mta_start_script to "" will
33254219Scy	also prevent any MTA from being started at boot.
34254219Scy
35254219Scy20020404:
36254219Scy	Due to the import of sendmail 8.12.2 (see 20020217 entry), a new
37254219Scy	user and group are required in order for sendmail to run as a
38254219Scy	set-group-ID binary. A 'make installworld' will use the new user
39254219Scy	and group to set the owner and group of /var/spool/clientmqueue
40254219Scy	and will fail if the new user and group do not exist. The 'smmsp'
41254219Scy	user and group must be merged from src/etc/group and
42254219Scy	src/etc/master.passwd before using 'make installworld'.
43254219Scy
44254219Scy20020315:
45254219Scy	FreeBSD 5.0 DP-1 was basically branched today.
46254219Scy
47254219Scy20020225:
48254219Scy	Warnings are now errors in the kernel. Unless you are a developer,
49254219Scy	you should add -DNO_WERROR to your make line.
50254219Scy
51254219Scy20020217:
52254219Scy	sendmail 8.12.2 has been imported. The sendmail binary is no
53254219Scy	longer a set-user-ID root binary and the infrastructure to support
54254219Scy	command line mail submission has changed. Be sure to run
55254219Scy	mergemaster (especially for updating /etc/rc, /etc/defaults/rc.conf,
56254219Scy	and /etc/mail) and read /etc/mail/README for more details.
57254219Scy
58254219Scy20020112:
59254219Scy	The preferred configuration method for PAM is now /etc/pam.d/
60254219Scy	rather than /etc/pam.conf. If you have an unmodified
61254219Scy	pam.conf, just delete it after your next mergemaster run. If
62254219Scy	you have local modifications, you can use
63254219Scy	/usr/src/etc/pam.d/convert.pl to incorporate them into your
64254219Scy	/etc/pam.d.
65254219Scy
66254219Scy	Please see the following url for more details:
67254219Scyhttp://www.freebsd.org/cgi/mid.cgi?db=mid&id=<xzp6667fyoa.fsf@flood.ping.uio.no>
68254219Scy
69254219Scy20011229:
70254219Scy	If anyone here is already using the new rc.conf(5) variable
71254219Scy	networkfs_types, please note that it has changed
72254219Scyhttp://www.freebsd.org/cgi/mid.cgi?db=mid&id=<9744.1009655556@axl.seasidesoftware.co.za>
73254219Scy
74254219Scy20011220:
75254219Scy	sys/i4b/driver/i4b_ispppsubr.c has been retired. This file
76254219Scy	started out its life in the ISDN4BSD project as an offspring
77254219Scy	from sys/net/if_spppsubr.c, which eventually got a life of its
78254219Scy	own. All the accumulated features and bugfixes of the i4b
79254219Scy	version have now been merged back into the base system's
80254219Scy	version now. The only user-visible change resulting from this
81254219Scy	is that i4b's sppp(4) interfaces are to be managed with
82254219Scy	spppcontrol(8) again, since ispppcontrol(8) has been retired
83254219Scy	as well. (There has never been rc file support for
84254219Scy	ispppcontrol in -current, but only in -stable. That will be
85254219Scy	reverted by the time the changes are MFCed.)
86254219Scy
87254219Scy20011215:
88254219Scy	The fdc(4) driver has been updated and now automatically
89254219Scy	recognizes media in `standard' formats (like 1440 KB and
90254219Scy	720 KB for a 3.5" high-density drive) when accessing the
91254219Scy	default device node (e. g. /dev/fd0). The old variety of
92254219Scy	floppy device nodes /dev/fd*.* is no longer present by
93254219Scy	default, devices can be created (in DEVFS) on demand. They
94254219Scy	will need to be customized then for `odd' densities using
95254219Scy	fdcontrol(8).
96254219Scy
97254219Scy20011209:
98254219Scy	The bugs in procfs' debugging support code have been fixed,
99254219Scy	and truss(1) now works again.
100254219Scy
101254219Scy20011207:
102254219Scy	Daily security checks have been split out to use the periodic(8)
103254219Scy	scripts. Some change in configuration may be necessary. Please
104254219Scy	see
105254219Scyhttp://www.freebsd.org/cgi/mid.cgi?db=mid&id=<20011207155805.R8975@blossom.cjclark.org>
106254219Scy	for details.
107254219Scy
108254219Scy20011204:
109254219Scy	sos added VCD/SVCD support to ata driver and that needs the
110254219Scy	kernel and burncd to be in sync.
111254219Scy
112254219Scy20011203:
113254219Scy	The procfs pseudo-filesystem has now been converted to use the
114254219Scy	pseudofs framework. If you have 'options PROCFS' in your
115254219Scy	kernel config, you'll need to add 'options PSEUDOFS' if it's
116254219Scy	not there already.
117254219Scy
118254219Scy	This change temporarily breaks truss(1); use ktrace(1) instead
119254219Scy	until the issue has been resolved.
120254219Scy
121254219Scy20011202:
122254219Scy	A security hole in OpenSSH involving `UseLogin yes' has been
123254219Scy	patched.
124254219Scy
125254219Scy20011126:
126254219Scy	You need to remove /usr/obj/.../usr.bin/tip before rebuilding
127254219Scy	after this date. You need to do this only once.
128254219Scy
129254219Scy20011103:
130254219Scy	Most of the awk issues have been resolved. Some rough
131254219Scy	edges may be left, but for the most part things should be
132254219Scy	back to "normal." For CURRENT's usual definition of "normal."
133254219Scy
134254219Scy20011030:
135254219Scy	Awk has been upgraded to the one true awk from bell labs. Expect
136254219Scy	choppy waves in the upgrade process.
137254219Scy
138254219Scy20011030:
139254219Scy	The asr driver problem has been resolved.
140254219Scy
141254219Scy20011027:
142254219Scy	Due to changes in other parts of the system, the asr driver
143254219Scy	now causes the system to panic on boot. Do not use it pending
144254219Scy	correction. Comment it out of any kernel config file that you
145254219Scy	try to use from this date forward.
146254219Scy
147254219Scy20011025:
148254219Scy	When crossbuilding, use TARGET=xxx where you used to use
149254219Scy	MACHINE=xxx. You don't need to set TARGET_ARCH and TARGET,
150254219Scy	unless you are changing both of them. To cross build pc98 on
151254219Scy	an alpha, for example, you need to set TARGET=pc98 and
152254219Scy	TARGET_ARCH=i386.
153254219Scy
154254219Scy20011001:
155254219Scy	The kernel interface that burncd depends on has changed.
156254219Scy	You must recompile both the kernel and userland applications
157254219Scy	at the same time.
158254219Scy
159254219Scy20010929:
160254219Scy	When crossbuilding, please set TARGET_ARCH rather than
161254219Scy	MACHINE_ARCH to indicate the target. In the future, one will
162254219Scy	set TARGET_MACHINE where you set MACHINE now. At the moment,
163254219Scy	setting MACHINE alone for same MACHINE_ARCH machines works
164254219Scy	(eg, you can build pc98 on a i386 machine and vice versa).
165254219Scy
166254219Scy20010927:
167254219Scy	Some weird problems result from using ACPI on some machines.
168254219Scy	To disable ACPI you can add
169254219Scy hint.acpi.0.disable="1"
170254219Scy	to /boot/loader.conf (or by putting set X=Y at the boot
171254219Scy	loader "ok" prompt).
172254219Scy
173254219Scy	Alternatively, you can remove it from /boot/kernel/acpi.ko
174254219Scy	or use the MODULES_OVERRIDE function in your kernel config
175254219Scy	file and not list acpi in that list.
176254219Scy
177254219Scy20010924:
178254219Scy	The buildworld has been fixed. You may need to install
179254219Scy	the 4.x compatibility libraries for some old binaries
180254219Scy	to work. Add COMPAT4X=true to your /etc/make.conf to
181254219Scy	get them installed on every installworld, or execute the
182254219Scy	following to get them installed only once:
183254219Scy cd src/lib/compat/compat4x.<arch>
184254219Scy make all install
185254219Scy	You will see ``__stdoutp undefined'' until you do this.
186254219Scy
187254219Scy20010919:
188254219Scy	There's a bug in the world build process. The cross-tools
189254219Scy	are build with the NEW headers, but the OLD libc.a. This
190254219Scy	leads to all kinds of problems with the new libc. A temporary
191254219Scy	workaround is to add
192254219Scy CFLAGS="-O -pipe -D_OLD_STDIO"
193254219Scy	before building world when upgrading from 4.x to current. This
194254219Scy	can be removed afterwards.
195254219Scy
196254219Scy	A proper fix to the buildworld target is needed.
197254219Scy
198254219Scy20010918:
199254219Scy	Peter has committed his new kthread nfs client/server code.
200254219Scy	NFS may be unstable after this date.
201254219Scy
202254219Scy20010912:
203254219Scy	KSE has hit the tree. Lots of things are now different in
204254219Scy	the kernel. While a few problems were introduced in the
205254219Scy	initial commit, most of the major ones have been found and
206254219Scy	corrected.
207254219Scy
208254219Scy20010901:
209254219Scy	In OLDCARD, CardBus bridges appear to be stable. The work
210254219Scy	arounds described in the 20010604 entry are now no longer
211254219Scy	necessary and will be ignored. Most insert/remove problems
212254219Scy	have been rectified around this date.
213254219Scy
214254219Scy20010823:
215254219Scy named now runs as user bind and group bind rather than as
216254219Scy root. If named_enable is set to YES in /etc/rc.conf, ensure
217254219Scy that user bind is available in /etc/passwd (using vipw(8))
218254219Scy and that group bind is available in /etc/group. Also make
219254219Scy sure that user or group bind has read (and not write)
220254219Scy permission for your name server configuration and that it
221254219Scy has read and write permission for your slave zone files and
222254219Scy directory.
223254219Scy
224254219Scy If you wish to continue to run named as root (a less secure
225254219Scy alternative), add a line to /etc/rc.conf saying
226254219Scy
227254219Scy named_flags=
228254219Scy
229254219Scy20010709:
230254219Scy	The PAM libraries have had an API upgrade that is beyond
231254219Scy	the ability of the shared library major number to handle.
232254219Scy	It is manifested by PAM-using ports dumping core. The
233254219Scy	solution is to rebuild those ports.
234254219Scy
235254219Scy20010628:
236254219Scy	The kernel compile module has moved from src/sys/compile/FOO
237254219Scy	to src/sys/${MACHINE}/compile/FOO.
238254219Scy
239254219Scy20010625:
240254219Scy	The pccard modem issue from 20010613 has been corrected.
241254219Scy	OLDCARD support is still a little weak in -current. slot 1 is
242254219Scy	known not to work on some TI based cardbus bridges. Some
243254219Scy	cardbus bridges do not properly detect insert/removal events.
244254219Scy	IRQ configuration needs more safety belts.
245254219Scy
246254219Scy20010617:
247254219Scy	Softupdates problems have been corrected.
248254219Scy
249254219Scy20010614:
250254219Scy	Peter ripped out the linkerset support. You must, as always,
251254219Scy	rerun config after you cvsup if you are using the traditional
252254219Scy	kernel building methods.
253254219Scy
254254219Scy20010613:
255254219Scy	pccard modems may not work with current after 20010604 date. Some
256254219Scy	do, others result in panics. *MAKE*SURE* that you update your
257254219Scy	config and /etc/rc.conf ala the 20010604 entry, or you will have
258254219Scy	problems (this issue will be fixed, it just hasn't been yet).
259254219Scy
260254219Scy20010613:
261254219Scy	SOFTUPDATES seem to be broken since the middle of May or so. Do not
262254219Scy	use them in current. You can disable softupdates on all mounted
263254219Scy	partitions, or remove SOFTUPDATES the kernel config file.
264254219Scy
265254219Scy20010612:
266254219Scy	After Peter's commits to the hints code, people have been noticing
267254219Scy	that certain devices are attached (or try to) twice. This is due
268254219Scy	to having both static hints as well as a /boot/device.hints. To
269254219Scy	work around this issue, please use only one or the other mechanism
270254219Scy	until this bug is fixed.
271254219Scy
272254219Scy	Please note that a feature of config is that if you have config
273254219Scy	file FOO and FOO.hints, it automatically adds FOO.hints to the
274254219Scy	hints.c file, wheather you want it to or not.
275254219Scy
276254219Scy20010610:
277254219Scy	Locale names have changed to match other systems better.
278254219Scy
279254219Scy20010604:
280254219Scy	pccard support for pci cards has been committed. You must change
281254219Scy	your /etc/pccard.conf irq lines. It must match the irq used by
282254219Scy	pcic device. Interrupt storms may result if you fail to do this.
283254219Scy	Interrupt storms look a lot like a hang.
284254219Scy
285254219Scy	You must also install a new pccardd, otherwise you will get an
286254219Scy	interrupt storm at card reset time (just after it tells you what
287254219Scy	it is).
288254219Scy
289254219Scy	pccardd_flags="-I" is necessary for the time being. It tells pccardd
290254219Scy	not to ask the kernel if the interrupt is really free or not before
291254219Scy	using it. You can either change the /etc/pccard.conf irq lines to
292254219Scy	match pcic, or add "-i X" to the pccardd_flags.
293254219Scy
294254219Scy20010530:
295254219Scy	INSTALL=install -C is being deprecated. If you want to do this,
296254219Scy	use COPY=-C instead. The former method will be supported for only
297254219Scy	a limited time. If you see
298254219Scy
299254219Scyinstall: warning: the -d and -C options may not be specified together
300254219Scy
301254219Scy	in your makeworld, then you need to migrate towards using
302254219Scy	COPY=-C.
303254219Scy
304254219Scy20010525:
305254219Scy	It appears that vm is now stable enough to use again. However,
306254219Scy	there may be other problems, so caution is still urged. alpha
307254219Scy	definitely is in bad shape.
308254219Scy
309254219Scy20010521:
310254219Scy	Minor repo damange has happened. This may cause problems
311254219Scy	with cvsup of ports. If you get errors, please see
312254219Scy	http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=27495
313254219Scy	at the bottom for details on a workaround. The error message
314254219Scy	is
315254219ScyUpdater failed: Cannot delete "/usr/ports/www/jakarta-tomcat/files": Directory not empty
316254219Scy
317254219Scy20010520:
318254219Scy	Vm and/or swapping are busted on -current. Please be patient.
319254219Scy
320254219Scy20010519:
321254219Scy	pccard has had much reorganizational work done to it over
322254219Scy	the past few days. Everything should still work, but if
323254219Scy	not, please contact imp@freebsd.org.
324254219Scy
325254219Scy20010517:
326254219Scy	ata ioctl changed. Make sure to recompile both kernel and
327254219Scy	userland at the same time.
328254219Scy
329254219Scy20010517:
330254219Scy	New ncurses imported.
331254219Scy
332254219Scy20010512:
333254219Scy	DEVFS is now opt out, not opt in. Barring major problems, this
334254219Scy	will be the only way to go starting July 1.
335254219Scy
336254219Scy20010504:
337254219Scy	OpenSSH has been updated to 2.9. Some defaults are different,
338254219Scy	including RhostsRSAAuthentication, which changes from yes to no.
339254219Scy
340254219Scy20010502:
341254219Scy	Perl breakage in 20010501 was corrected at 14:18:33 PDT.
342254219Scy

350254219Scy20010429:
351254219Scy	A bad bug was committed at 04:48:42 PDT. Don't use kernels after
352254219Scy	this date, but before the correction date.
353254219Scy
354254219Scy20010423:
355254219Scy	old fsck and new kernel interactions appear to have been fixed.
356254219Scy
357254219Scy20010411:
358254219Scy	fsck and the kernel were changed to handle some optimizations
359254219Scy	to directory layout. This breaks backward compatibility.
360254219Scy	Update only if you understand that you must not use the old
361254219Scy	fsck with the new kernel ever.
362254219Scy
363254219Scy20010330:
364254219Scy	fsck has changed the meaning of the pass column in /etc/fstab.
365254219Scy	Please see the cvs commit to fsck.8 or the fsck.8 man page for
366254219Scy	details. It is unclear if changes to /etc/fstab are necessary.
367254219Scy
368254219Scy20010319:
369254219Scy	portmap had changed name to rpcbind for maximum POLA in your
370254219Scy	current world. /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} needs changes. nfs and
371254219Scy	other rpc based programs that rely on portmapper will not work
372254219Scy	without updates to /etc/hosts.{allow,deny} and /etc/netconfig.
373254219Scy
374254219Scy20010315:
375254219Scy	ata subsystem changes. ATA_ENABLE_ATAPI_DMA, ATA_ENABLE_WC
376254219Scy	and ATA_ENABEL_TAGS are no longer kernel options. They have
377254219Scy	been replaced by tunables. See ata.4 for details.
378254219Scy
379254219Scy20010312:
380254219Scy	The fxp driver was converted to use miibus. If you compile
381254219Scy	fxp into your kernel statically, you will need to add miibus.
382254219Scy
383254219Scy20010312:
384254219Scy	The wi device now defaults to BSS (infrastructure) mode
385254219Scy	instead of ad-hoc.
386254219Scy
387254219Scy20010310:
388254219Scy	/dev/urandom should be a symbolic link to /dev/random now.
389254219Scy	Users of current not using DEVFS need to run MAKEDEV std.
390254219Scy	ssh might not work if you don't.
391254219Scy
392254219Scy20010303:
393254219Scy	The ed driver has been updated. It now allows mii attachments,
394254219Scy	which means that you must include the miibus in your kernel if
395254219Scy	you use the ed driver.
396254219Scy
397254219Scy20010220:
398254219Scy	The problems with libc have been corrected. It is now mostly
399254219Scy	safe to go back into the water.
400254219Scy
401254219Scy20010211:
402254219Scy	The size of FILE was changed. This breaks upgrading. If
403254219Scy	you must upgrade, be prepared for pain. It also breaks almost
404254219Scy	all binaries that you've compiled on -current. You are warned
405254219Scy	that before upgrading would be a good time to do a level 0
406254219Scy	dump of your system. No, really, I mean it this time.
407254219Scy
408254219Scy	To get to the new system, you'll need to use the following
409254219Scy	workaround. Hopefully this can be sorted out so that we
410254219Scy	don't have to move this to the updating section.
411254219Scy
412254219Scy	To get around the installworld problem, do:
413254219Scy # cd /usr/src/usr.bin/sed
414254219Scy # make install
415254219Scy # cd /usr/src
416254219Scy # make installworld
417254219Scy	If that doesn't work, then try:
418254219Scy # make -k installworld
419254219Scy # make installworld
420254219Scy
421254219Scy20010207:
422254219Scy	DEVFS is now the default. If you use vinum, make sure that you
423254219Scy	do not include devfs in your kernel as problems result.
424254219Scy
425254219Scy20010205:
426254219Scy	FFS_ROOT and CD9660_ROOT have been removed or deprecated.
427254219Scy	Remove them from your config.

432254219Scy	****************************** WARNING ******************************
433254219Scy	KERNCONF replaces the variable KERNEL for buildkernel. You
434254219Scy	should update your scripts and make.conf accordingly.
435254219Scy
436254219Scy20010119:
437254219Scy	config has changed to allow DEV_FOO as a replacement for NFOO.
438254219Scy	This requires a new config to build correctly.
439254219Scy
440254219Scy20010116:
441254219Scy	The kerrnel option I386_CPU is now mutually exclusive with the
442254219Scy	other cpu types. If you have an i386 system, be sure that it
443254219Scy	only had this line. Remove it for all other configurations.
444254219Scy
445254219Scy20010110:
446254219Scy	Changes to the kernel require it and burncd be in sync.
447254219Scy
448254219Scy20010102:
449254219Scy	Everyone who has hw.sndunit set to something in
450254219Scy	/etc/sysctl.conf, it is now hw.snd.unit.
451254219Scy
452254219Scy20010101:
453254219Scy	ex and vi were broken by some changes to sys/queue.h. If you
454254219Scy	have a bad vi, you will see make buildworld fail with a core
455254219Scy	dump while building termcap. You can work around this problem
456254219Scy	by adding -k to your make buildworld. This will cause the
457254219Scy	build to complete and install a new vi. Once that's done, you
458254219Scy	can rebuild again without the -k to pick up anything that
459254219Scy	might have been ignored by the -k option.
460254219Scy
461254219Scy	Others have suggested that you can just rebuild libc if your
462254219Scy	vi/ex is dynamically linked, but I've not received any reports
463254219Scy	of this working.
464254219Scy
465254219Scy20001228:
466254219Scy	There have been some changes to libcrypt in -current. The
467254219Scy	libscrypt/libdescrypt symlink sillyness is gone and the installed
468254219Scy	libcrypt is fully functional. Be aware of this.
469254219Scy
470254219Scy20001218:
471254219Scy	Linksys Fast Ethernet PCCARD cards supported by the ed driver
472254219Scy	now require the addition of flag 0x80000 to their config line
473254219Scy	in pccard.conf(5). This flag is not optional. These Linksys
474254219Scy	cards will not be recognized without it.
475254219Scy
476254219Scy20001205:
477254219Scy	Important new FreeBSD-version stuff: PAM support has been worked
478254219Scy	in, partially from the "Unix" OpenSSH version. This requires
479254219Scy	adding the following in pam.conf:
480254219Scy
481254219Scy	sshd auth sufficient pam_skey.so
482254219Scy	sshd auth required pam_unix.so try_first_pass

546254219Scy	The random device has been turned into a (pseudo-)device,
547254219Scy	rather than an option. The supplied kernel config files have
548254219Scy	been updated. You will need to do something similar in your
549254219Scy	own kernel config file.
550254219Scy	Remove:
551254219Scy options RANDOMDEV
552254219Scy	Add:
553254219Scy device random

557254219Scy20000909:
558254219Scy	The random device module has been renamed from randomdev.ko to
559254219Scy	random.ko. You will need to edit your /boot/loader.conf to
560254219Scy	reflect this if you load this module at boot time.
561254219Scy	The line should read:
562254219Scy random_load="YES"
563254219Scy
564254219Scy20000907:
565254219Scy	The SMPNG commit has happened. It should work, but if it
566254219Scy	doesn't, fallback to the PRE_SMPNG CVS tag. There are likely
567254219Scy	to be a variety of minor issues. Please see 20000905 to make
568254219Scy	sure you don't have model loading problems which might at
569254219Scy	first blush appear related to SMP.
570254219Scy
571254219Scy20000906:
572254219Scy	nsswitch has been imported from NetBSD. Among other things,
573254219Scy	this means that /etc/host.conf is no longer used. See
574254219Scy	nsswitch.conf(5) instead. Note that at boot time rc.network
575254219Scy	will attempt to produce a new nsswitch.conf file for you if you
576254219Scy	don't have one, and you have host.conf.
577254219Scy
578254219Scy20000905:
579254219Scy	The ucred structure changed size. This breaks the interface
580254219Scy	that mountd uses. Trying to use an older mountd with a newer
581254219Scy	kernel guarantees a panic. This means that you need to use
582254219Scy	kernels newer than today only with matching mountd, but you
583254219Scy	needed to do that anyway with the boot loader changes.
584254219Scy
585254219Scy20000905:
586254219Scy	The boot loader has been updated. The new default kernel is
587254219Scy	now /boot/kernel/kernel.ko. The new default module location
588254219Scy	is /boot/kernel.
589254219Scy
590254219Scy	You *MUST* upgrade your boot loader and kernel at the same time.
591254219Scy	The easiest way to do this is to do the buildworld/buildkernel/
592254219Scy	installkernel/installworld dance.
593254219Scy
594254219Scy	Furthermore, you are urged to delete your old /modules directory
595254219Scy	before booting the new kernel, since kldload will find stale
596254219Scy	modules in that directory instead of finding them in the correct
597254219Scy	path, /boot/kernel. The most common complaint that this cures
598254219Scy	is that the linux module crashes your machine after the update.
599254219Scy
600254219Scy	if [ ! -d /boot/kernel.old ]; then
601254219Scy mv /modules.old /boot/kernel.old
602254219Scy chflags noschg /kernel.old
603254219Scy mv /kernel.old /boot/kernel.old/kernel.ko

606254219Scy
607254219Scy20000904:
608254219Scy	A new issue with the sendmail upgrade has come to light.
609254219Scy	/etc/aliases has moved to /etc/mail/aliases. Mergemaster will
610254219Scy	incorrectly install the default aliases in /etc/mail rather than
611254219Scy	move the old one from /etc. So you'll need to manually move the
612254219Scy	file, create a symbolic link, remove the old /etc/aliases.db and
613254219Scy	run newaliases. For safety sake, you should stop sendmail
614254219Scy	while doing this and run the upgrade when locally sourced email
615254219Scy	is not likely to be generated.
616254219Scy
617254219Scy20000825:
618254219Scy	/boot/device.hints is now required for installkernel to
619254219Scy	succeed. You should copy GENERIC.hints for your architecture
620254219Scy	into /boot/device.hints. If and only if you compile hints
621254219Scy	into your kernel, then this file may be empty. Please note,
622254219Scy	if you have an empty or missing /boot/device.hints file and
623254219Scy	you neglected to compile hints into your kernel, no boot
624254219Scy	messages will appear after the boot loader tries to start the
625254219Scy	kernel.
626254219Scy
627254219Scy20000821:
628254219Scy	If you do NOT have ``options RANDOMDEV'' in your kernel and
629254219Scy	you DO want the random device then add randomdev_load="YES" to
630254219Scy	/boot/loader.conf.
631254219Scy
632254219Scy20000812:
633254219Scy	suidperl is now always built and installed on the system, but
634254219Scy	with permissions of 511. If you have applications that use
635254219Scy	this program, you are now required to add ENABLE_SUIDPERL=true
636254219Scy	to /etc/make.conf. If you forget to do this,
637254219Scy chmod 4511 /usr/bin/suidperl
638254219Scy	will fix this until the next build.

641254219Scy	sendmail has been updated from 8.9.3 to 8.11.0. Some of the more

665254219Scy	afterwards (unless the variables already are set, of course):
666254219Scy # Enable network daemons for user convenience.

676	The "installkernel" target has changed slightly. Now even if
677	you override KERNEL e.g. 'make installkernel KERNEL=MYKERNEL'
678	it will install the MYKERNEL file (built with the buildkernel
679	target) as /kernel rather than /MYKERNEL. Those who have

681	should remove that entry or perform manual rename of /kernel

696	/etc/security has been updated to print the inode number of
697	setuid programs that have changed. You will see a large spike
698	in the number of changed programs the first time when you run
699	mergemaster to get a new /etc/security.
700
70120000710:
702	/dev/random now has good entropy collection (from the keyboard
703	and sysmouse drivers). Please ensure that either `options
704	RANDOMDEV' is present in your kernel config file or that
705	`randomdev_load="YES"' is in your /boot/loader.conf. If you do
706	not have the /dev/random driver, OpenSSL (and consequently
707	lots of crypto tools (like SSH)) will fail with strange
708	errors. (see below, 20000624).
709
710	FreeBSD-current is safe again to run Crypto.
711
71220000709:
713	phk made the malloc default options AJ. This may slow things
714	down and uncover other latent bugs in the code. If you need to
715	run at full speed, you can disable this by doing the following:
716 ln -s aj /etc/malloc.conf
717
71820000706:
719	libftpio's version was accidentally bumped a few days ago. This
720	has been corrected. You may need to remove /usr/lib/libftpio.so.6
721	before doing your next buildworld/installworld pair. It certainly
722	won't hurt to remove it before the update procedure. It will
723	break fetch until a new one is built, but ftp can be used in the
724	interim if needed.
725
72620000705:
727	The crypto packages have changed for the cvsup. This has been done
728	in a backward compatible way, but the old packages will go away at
729	some point in the future. Look at /usr/share/examples/cvsup for
730	details.
731
73220000704:
733	With the new sys/modules/sound/drivers/*, you will need to
734	set SYSDIR until you do an installworld after July 7th.
735
73620000704:
737	rc.shutdown and rc will now call the rc.d scripts with start
738	or stop. This may cause some harmless warnings from older
739	rc.d scripts that haven't been updated.
740
74120000630:
742	The libfetch based version of fetch has gone into the tree.
743	Minor problems may result on some of the less popular sites,
744	which should be reported to des@freebsd.org.
745
74620000625:
747	From approximately this date forward, one must have the crypto
748	system installed in order to build the system and kernel.
749	While not technically strictly true, one should treat it as
750	required and grab the crypto bits. If you are grabbing CVS
751	trees, src-all and cvs-crypto should be treated as if they
752	were required. You should check with the latest collections
753	to make sure that these haven't changed.
754
75520000624:
756	Mark Murray just committed the first parts of a cleanup of
757	/dev/zero, et al. This is also cleaning up /dev/random.
758	The entropy is disconnected, so DO NOT USE VERSIONS OF FREEBSD
759	-CURRENT FROM THIS POINT to 2000710 for cryptographic services
760	until Mark can merge in the fixes to this work in progress.
761	openssh and openssl should not be used to generate keys from this
762	date to the completion of the work.
763
764	If you must operate at this reduced level of security, add '
765	options RANDOMDEV' to your kernel or modload the randomdev
766	module. You may also need to copy a new MAKEDEV to /dev and
767	recreate the random and urandom devices.
768
76920000622:
770	The license on the softupdates is now a standard 2 clause
771	BSD license. You may need to remove your symbolic links
772	that used to be required when updating.
773
77420000621:
775	Scott Flatman <sf@aracnet.com> sent in a decent write-up on
776	the config file update procedure.
777 http://people.freebsd.org/~imp/config-upd.html
778	NOTE: LINT is gone. It has been replaced with NOTES. NOTES
779	isn't buildable. However, you can generate a LINT file.
780
78120000620:
782	Binutils 2.10 have hit the tree, or will shortly. As soon
783	as they do, the problem noted in 20000522 will be resolved and
784	that workaround will no longer be required.
785
78620000615:
787	phk removed the compatibility creation of wd devices in the
788	ad driver. If you haven't done so already, you must update
789	your fstab, etc to use the ad devices instead of the wd
790	devices.
791
792	In addition, you'll need to update your boot blocks to a
793	more modern version, if you haven't already done so. Modern
794	here means 4.0 release or newer (although older releases
795	may work).
796
79720000612:
798	Peter took an axe to config(8). Be sure that you read his mail
799	on the topic before even thinking about updating. You will
800	need to create a /boot/device.hints or add a hints directive
801	to your config file to compile them in statically. The format
802	of the config file has changed as well. Please see GENERIC or
803	NEWCARD for examples of the new format.
804
80520000522:
806	A new set of binutils went into the tree today. Anybody
807	building a kernel after this point is advised that they need
808	to rebuild their binutils (or better yet do a
809	buildworld/installworld) before building a new kernel.
810
811	Due to bugs in binutils, using malloc options (eg /etc/malloc.conf
812	or MALLOC_OPTIONS env var) J will cause ld to dump core. It
813	is recommended that you don't set this option until the problem
814	is resolved.
815
81620000513:
817	The ethernet drivers were all updated to clean up the BPF handling.
818
81920000510:
820	The problems with boot blocks on the alphas have been corrected.
821	This will require some care in updating alphas. A new libstand
822	is requires for the boot blocks to build properly.
823
82420000503:
825	Recompile all kld modules. Proper version dependency info
826	is now available.
827
82820000502:
829	Modules have been disconnected from the buildworld tree and
830	connected to the kernel building instead.
831
83220000427:
833	You may need to build gperf
834 cd /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/gperf && make depend all install
835	when upgrading from 4.0 -> current. The build system now uses
836	an option only in -current.
837
83820000417:
839	The method that we brand ELF binaries has changed to be more
840	acceptable to the binutils maintainers. You will need to
841	rebrand your ELF binaries that aren't native. One problem
842	binary is the Linux ldconfig. After your make world, but
843	before you reboot, you'll need to issue:
844 brandelf -t Linux /compat/linux/sbin/ldconfig
845	if you have Linux compatibility enabled on your machine.
846
84720000320:
848	If you have really bad/marginal IDE drives, you may find they
849	don't work well. Use pio mode instead. The easiest way to
850	cope if you have a problem combination is to add:
851 /sbin/sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio,pio,pio,pio
852	to the start of /etc/rc.conf.
853
85420000319:
855	The ISA and PCI compatibility shims have been connected to the
856	options COMPAT_OLDISA and COMPAT_OLDPCI. If you are using old
857	style PCI or ISA drivers (i.e. tx, voxware, etc.) you must
858	include the appropriate option in your kernel config. Drivers
859	using the shims should be updated or they won't ship with
860	5.0-RELEASE, targeted for 2001.
861
86220000318:
863	We've entered the traditional post release dumping party.
864	Large kernel changes are being committed and are in the
865	works. It is important to keep the systems' klds and kernel
866	in sync as kernel interfaces and structures are changing.
867	Before reporting kernel panics, make sure that all modules
868	that you are loading are up to date.
869
87020000315:
871	If you are upgrading from an older version of FreeBSD, you
872	need to update your boot blocks as well. 'disklabel -B ad0'
873	will do the trick. This isn't critical until you remove your
874	wd device entries in /dev, at which point your system will not
875	boot.
876
87720000315:
878	4.0 RELEASE shipped. Please see the 4.0 UPDATING file for how
879	to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.x.
880
881COMMON ITEMS:
882
883	General Notes
884	-------------
885	Avoid using make -j when upgrading. From time to time in the
886	past there have been problems using -j with buildworld and/or
887	installworld. This is especially true when upgrading between
888	"distant" versions (eg one that cross a major release boundary
889	or several minor releases, or when several months have passed
890	on the -current branch).
891
892	Sometimes, obscure build problems are the result of environment
893	poisoning. This can happen because the make utility reads its
894	environment when searching for values for global variables.
895	To run your build attempts in an "environmental clean room",
896	prefix all make commands with 'env -i '. See the env(1) manual
897	page for more details.
898
899	To build a kernel
900	-----------------
901	If you are updating from a prior version of FreeBSD (even one just
902	a few days old), you should follow this procedure. With a
903	/usr/obj tree with a fresh buildworld,
904	make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE
905	make installkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE
906
907	To just build a kernel when you know that it won't mess you up
908	--------------------------------------------------------------
909	cd src/sys/{i386,alpha}/conf
910	config KERNEL_NAME_HERE
911	cd ../../compile/KERNEL_NAME_HERE
912	make depend
913	make
914	make install
915
916	If this fails, go to the "To build a kernel" section.
917
918	To rebuild everything and install it on the current system.
919	-----------------------------------------------------------
920	make world
921	Build a new kernel, see above.
922
923	To upgrade from 4.x-stable to current
924	-------------------------------------
925	make buildworld
926	make buildkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE
927	cp src/sys/${MACHINE_ARCH}/conf/GENERIC.hints /boot/device.hints [2]
928	make installkernel KERNCONF=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE
929	reboot in single user [3]
930	make installworld
931	mergemaster [4]
932	[1]
933	<reboot>
934
935	Make sure that you've read the UPDATING file to understand the
936	tweaks to various things you need. At this point in the life
937	cycle of current, things change often and you are on your own
938	to cope. The defaults can also change, so please read ALL of
939	the UPDATING entries.
940
941	Also, if you are tracking -current, you must be subscribed to
942	freebsd-current@freebsd.org. Make sure that before you update
943	your sources that you have read and understood all the recent
944	messages there. If in doubt, please track -stable which has
945	much fewer pitfalls.
946
947	[1] If you have third party modules, such as vmware, you
948	should disable them at this point so they don't crash your
949	system on reboot.
950
951	[2] If you have legacy ISA devices, you may need to create
952	your own device.hints to reflect your unique hardware
953	configuration.
954
955	[3] From the bootblocks, boot -s, and then do
956 fsck -p
957 mount -u /
958 mount -a
959 cd /usr/src
960 adjkerntz -i # if CMOS is wall time
961
962	[4] Note: This step is non-optional. Failure to do this step
963	can result in a significant reduction in the functionality of the
964	system. Attempting to do it by hand is not recommended and those
965	that pursue this avenue should read this file carefully, as well
966	as the archives of freebsd-current and freebsd-hackers mailing lists
967	for potential gotchas.
968
