UPDATING revision 61891
1Updating Information for FreeBSD current users 2 3This file is maintained by imp@village.org. Please send new entries 4directly to him. See end of file for further details. For commonly 5done items, please see the end of the file. Search for 'COMMON 6ITEMS:' 7 820000620: 9 Binutils 2.10 have hit the tree, or will shortly. As soon 10 as they do, the problem noted in 20000522 will be resolved and 11 that workaround will no longer be required. 12 1320000615: 14 phk removed the compatibility creation of wd devices in the 15 ad driver. If you haven't done so already, you must update 16 your fstab, etc to use the ad devices instead of the wd 17 devices. 18 19 In addition, you'll need to update your boot blocks to a 20 more modern version, if you haven't already done so. Modern 21 here means 4.0 release or newer (although older releases 22 may work). 23 2420000612: 25 Peter took an axe to config(8). Besure that you read his mail 26 on the topic before even thinking about updating. You will 27 need to create a /boot/devices.hints or add a hints directive 28 to your config file to compile them in statically. The format 29 of the config file has changed as well. Please see LINT, 30 GENERIC or NEWCARD for examples of the new format. 31 32 More details to follow. A better howto would be warmly 33 accepted by the author of UPDATING. 34 3520000522: 36 A new set of binutils went into the tree today. Anybody 37 building a kernel after this point is advised that they need 38 to rebuild their binutils (or better yet do a 39 buildworld/installworld) before building a new kernel. 40 41 Due to bugs in binutils, using malloc options (eg /etc/malloc.conf 42 or MALLOC_OPTIONS env var) J will cause ld to dump core. It 43 is recommended that you don't set this option until the problem 44 is resolved. 45 4620000513: 47 The ethernet drivers were all updated to clean up the BPF handling. 48 4920000510: 50 The problems with boot blocks on the alphas have been corrected. 51 This will require some care in updating alphas. A new libstand 52 is requires for the boot blocks to build properly. 53 5420000503: 55 Recompile all kld modules. Proper version dependency info 56 is now available. 57 5820000502: 59 Modules have been disconnected from the buildworld tree and 60 connected to the kernel building instead. 61 622000427: 63 You may need to build gperf 64 cd /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/gperf && make depend all install 65 when upgrading from 4.0 -> current. The build system now uses 66 an option only in -current. 67 6820000417: 69 The method that we brand ELF binaries has changed to be more 70 acceptible to the binutils maintainers. You will need to 71 rebrand your ELF binaries that aren't native. One problem 72 binary is the Linux ldconfig. After your make world, but 73 before you reboot, you'll neeed to issue: 74 brandelf -t Linux /compat/linux/sbin/ldconfig 75 if you have Linux compatibility enabled on your machine. 76 7720000320: 78 If you have really bad/marginal IDE drives, you may find they 79 don't work well. Use pio mode instead. The easiest way to 80 cope if you have a problem combination is to add: 81 /sbin/sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio, pio, pio, pio 82 to the start of /etc/rc.conf. 83 8420000319: 85 The ISA and PCI compatability shims have been connected to the 86 options COMPAT_OLDISA and COMPAT_OLDPCI. If you are using old 87 style PCI or ISA drivers (i.e. tx, voxware, etc.) you must 88 include the appropriate option in your kernel config. Drivers 89 using the shims should be updated or they won't ship with 90 5.0-RELEASE, targeted for 2001. 91 9220000318: 93 We've entered the tradtional post release dumping party. 94 Large kernel changes are being committed and are in the 95 works. It is important to keep the systems' klds and kernel 96 in sync as kernel interfaces and structures are changing. 97 Before reporting kernel panics, make sure that all modules 98 that you are loading are up to date. 99 10020000315: 101 If you are upgrading from an older version of FreeBSD, you 102 need to update your boot blocks as well. 'disklabel -B ad0' 103 will do the trick. This isn't critical until you remove your 104 wd device entries in /dev, at which point your system will not 105 boot. 106 10720000315: 108 4.0 RELEASE shipped. Please see the 4.0 UPDATING file for how 109 to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.x. 110 111COMMON ITEMS: 112 113 To build a kernel 114 ----------------- 115 Update config, genassym and go: 116 config YOUR_KERNEL_HERE [1] 117 cd ../../compile/YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 118 make depend && make 119 make install 120 [1] If upgrading, add -r won't hurt and sometimes helps. 121 122 To rebuild everything 123 --------------------- 124 make world 125 126 To upgrade from 4.0-stable to current 127 ------------------------------------- 128 make buildworld 129 make buildkernel KERNEL=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 130 make installkernel KERNEL=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 131 make installworld 132 <reboot> 133 134 Make sure that you've read the UPDATING file to understand 135 the tweaks to various things you need. At this point in the 136 life cycloe of current, things change often and you are on 137 your own to cope. 138 139FORMAT: 140 141This file contains a list, in reverse chronologocal order, of major 142breakages in tracking -current. Not all things will be listed here, 143and it only starts on March 15, 2000. Updating files can found in 144previous releases if your system is older than this. 145 146Please filter your entries through Warner Losh (imp@village.org) so 147that the style, formatting, etc of this file can be maintained. 148 149$FreeBSD: head/UPDATING 61891 2000-06-21 07:06:38Z imp $ 150
