UPDATING revision 61889
1Updating Information for FreeBSD current users 2 3This file is maintained by imp@village.org. Please send new entries 4directly to him. See end of file for further details. For commonly 5done items, please see the end of the file. Search for 'COMMON 6ITEMS:' 7 820000615: 9 phk removed the compatibility creation of wd devices in the 10 ad driver. If you haven't done so already, you must update 11 your fstab, etc to use the ad devices instead of the wd 12 devices. 13 1420000612: 15 Peter took an axe to config(8). Besure that you read his mail 16 on the topic before even thinking about updating. More details 17 to follow. 18 1920000522: 20 A new set of binutils went into the tree today. Anybody 21 building a kernel after this point is advised that they need 22 to rebuild their binutils (or better yet do a 23 buildworld/installworld) before building a new kernel. 24 25 Due to bugs in binutils, using malloc options (eg /etc/malloc.conf 26 or MALLOC_OPTIONS env var) J will cause ld to dump core. It 27 is recommended that you don't set this option until the problem 28 is resolved. 29 3020000513: 31 The ethernet drivers were all updated to clean up the BPF handling. 32 3320000510: 34 The problems with boot blocks on the alphas have been corrected. 35 This will require some care in updating alphas. A new libstand 36 is requires for the boot blocks to build properly. 37 3820000503: 39 Recompile all kld modules. Proper version dependency info 40 is now available. 41 4220000502: 43 Modules have been disconnected from the buildworld tree and 44 connected to the kernel building instead. 45 462000427: 47 You may need to build gperf 48 cd /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/gperf && make depend all install 49 when upgrading from 4.0 -> current. The build system now uses 50 an option only in -current. 51 5220000417: 53 The method that we brand ELF binaries has changed to be more 54 acceptible to the binutils maintainers. You will need to 55 rebrand your ELF binaries that aren't native. One problem 56 binary is the Linux ldconfig. After your make world, but 57 before you reboot, you'll neeed to issue: 58 brandelf -t Linux /compat/linux/sbin/ldconfig 59 if you have Linux compatibility enabled on your machine. 60 6120000320: 62 If you have really bad/marginal IDE drives, you may find they 63 don't work well. Use pio mode instead. The easiest way to 64 cope if you have a problem combination is to add: 65 /sbin/sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio, pio, pio, pio 66 to the start of /etc/rc.conf. 67 6820000319: 69 The ISA and PCI compatability shims have been connected to the 70 options COMPAT_OLDISA and COMPAT_OLDPCI. If you are using old 71 style PCI or ISA drivers (i.e. tx, voxware, etc.) you must 72 include the appropriate option in your kernel config. Drivers 73 using the shims should be updated or they won't ship with 74 5.0-RELEASE, targeted for 2001. 75 7620000318: 77 We've entered the tradtional post release dumping party. 78 Large kernel changes are being committed and are in the 79 works. It is important to keep the systems' klds and kernel 80 in sync as kernel interfaces and structures are changing. 81 Before reporting kernel panics, make sure that all modules 82 that you are loading are up to date. 83 8420000315: 85 If you are upgrading from an older version of FreeBSD, you 86 need to update your boot blocks as well. 'disklabel -B ad0' 87 will do the trick. This isn't critical until you remove your 88 wd device entries in /dev, at which point your system will not 89 boot. 90 9120000315: 92 4.0 RELEASE shipped. Please see the 4.0 UPDATING file for how 93 to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.x. 94 95COMMON ITEMS: 96 97 To build a kernel 98 ----------------- 99 Update config, genassym and go: 100 config YOUR_KERNEL_HERE [1] 101 cd ../../compile/YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 102 make depend && make 103 make install 104 [1] If upgrading, add -r won't hurt and sometimes helps. 105 106 To rebuild everything 107 --------------------- 108 make world 109 110 To upgrade from 4.0-stable to current 111 ------------------------------------- 112 make buildworld 113 make buildkernel KERNEL=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 114 make installkernel KERNEL=YOUR_KERNEL_HERE 115 make installworld 116 <reboot> 117 118 Make sure that you've read the UPDATING file to understand 119 the tweaks to various things you need. At this point in the 120 life cycloe of current, things change often and you are on 121 your own to cope. 122 123FORMAT: 124 125This file contains a list, in reverse chronologocal order, of major 126breakages in tracking -current. Not all things will be listed here, 127and it only starts on March 15, 2000. Updating files can found in 128previous releases if your system is older than this. 129 130Please filter your entries through Warner Losh (imp@village.org) so 131that the style, formatting, etc of this file can be maintained. 132 133$FreeBSD: head/UPDATING 61889 2000-06-21 06:59:35Z imp $ 134
